Yes, but let's be honest: that never ends up being just the tip.

Don't know about instructors, but I always tip the guide, independent of orientation.

As far as the rain goes, well, we've got good snow so it's kinda the old yinyang.

Hey, he's a pal and a neighbor, so if it's for him, then it's for me.

Those guys live on tips, making less than 15% of your lesson price....50 bucks for a full day would be the least i tipped an instructor for a good day...more if he was awesome.

Yes, especially if you are taking your kids / GF back to them another time. You will get far superior service the next time.

$10 can go a long way.

Even if you pay $70 for a two hour lesson, you can expect that your ski instructor is making minimum wage.

Tip out the instructor. 10% to 20% depending on the quality of the experience. - Or offer to buy your instructor drinks at the end of the day if you got along really well.

as a college kid who instructs to have a pass and likes to work with kids but HATES PSIA, let me say to tip your instructor. you may be paying a ton for the lesson, but the instructor is making pretty much nothing from the mountain.

Instructors teaching private lessons make more than min wage, you cheap bastards should be tipping your patrollers

Not sure about other places, but one of my students is a snow-board instructor at our little local hill. She earns $10/hr for normal group lessons, but makes $25/hr for privates.

She sees the group lessons as a way to drum up her private biz. For an 18-yr old kid, the dough is pretty good. She gets a season's pass, free hill-logo gear, pro-deal on gear, and averages about $16/hr for her time on the hill.

Why would anyone tip a patroller? you are the most arrogant fucks on the mountain! Especially stateside. I might consider tipping a patrol in euroland because there not going to give me shit for ducking a rope or riding a closed area! Anyways this is a question about instructors not patrollers! no one cares that you spent six months doing emt and a bunch longer blowing dudes to get on pro patrol. And to answer the question, always tip your instructor, they do not make much more than minimum wage, even for privates and they don't get paid unless there is work... I was one for a few seasons, never ate so much ramen in my life!

Always tip, unless they are a shitty instructor then ask for a new lesson. If they are good make sure you ask for them for your next lesson.

Why do you hate PSIA? I probably know the answer, but if you have ever skied with the top PSIA guys like Mike Rogan who runs heavenly and portillo or mike hafer who runs northstar you'll know that these guys can ski. They genuinely can make you a better skier and instructor, they know what they are talking about. I have become a better skier because of skiing with these guys and in no way do i suscribe to a "perfect turn" ideal and i would be hard pressed if any of the top people at psia do either.

Yes there are more douche bag "perfect turn" Austrians involved in PSIA than any other organization that I can think of. but there is good stuff within the organization.

    Anyway here is a joke.

How do you know if a ski instructor is in a bar?

    Don't worry he'll tell you.

Sure, instructors make decent cash during the busy weeks, but they make very little if anything on the slower weeks when they still need to show up for daily line up only to be told...go ski or something until noon, and maybe we'll have something for you in the afternoon. So, yeah, tip 'em. And if you leave your kids with them all day so you can enjoy some turns, tip 'em for instruction and daycare.

I always take a few lessons a season and always tip the instructor 20%. Shocks me how few people do Next time I get that instructor, great lesson for sure.
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

Yeah. They should probably just let you get buried in a slide and shut the whole mountain down. Those arrogant fucks.

But then again, this is about instructors.

And with tipping, if they deserve it, yes. If they don't, no. No one gets a tip unless deserved in my book. Who cares how much they get paid? If they suck at their job, why give them more money? I had one of the crappiest lessons ever a few years back when at Snowbird. When I finally asked the instructor what I should be working on, he replied, "Not sure. You're okay. Let me watch you when we start skiing again." This was 70% of the way through the lesson. He never gave me instruction. So why the hell would I tip him for not even doing his job?

Tipping anyone for medical services isn't appropriate.
I did send over a couple of pizzas to the Steamboat patrol shack a many years ago. They helped my (then) young son down the mountain after he g-forced the toe binding off of his ski. Just as I'm trying to figure out how to carry the skis, pieces of binding, my poles and my son, 2 patrollers show up and take the burden.
A few weeks later, they took care of my daughter who had an injury. Transported her down the mountain and to YV Hospital.

No monetary tips, but certainly my gratitude and pizza.

HUH? when does patrol ever dig out avi barrels? thats what your partners are for. By the time patrol shows up there probably digging out your corpse. People should be able to make their own decisions is all I'm saying. Its unfortunate that in the "land of the free" we don't have this choice and some douche in a red jacket who think they know everything can tell you what you can and cannot do. I appreciate the control work that patrol does but I'm sure as shit not going to tip them for it, are you??? I agree that there is no reason to tip anyone who doesn't do there job, also know how frustrating it is to teach level one group lessons and have been guilty of not trying very hard a few times, primarily cuz no one tips for level one group lessons and you get paid dick so why bother right? which brings us back to TIP your instructor if you want a good lesson..
