    PNW Roll Call for Monday

Anyone headed to Crystal? Baker? Trying to decide. Is Crystal still super rocky? Anyone want to carpool from Seattle?

I'd recommend stevens if it doesnt get too warm cause the backside just opened.

forcasts are conflicting and none of them have been right more often this year. so honestly no one knows what gonna happen.

    DOT's reporting freezing rain, FYI.

Looks like around .25 of precip last 24 w/no new snow accumulation on the gauges.

    Ice skating.

heh. I called the snowphone this morning, just to be sure I wasn't missing anything good...yeah, raining at Crystal, temp was 37 in base area, 32 at Green Valley...this is at 5am. But according to the report, today is going to be a totally awesomer day!

Called again at noon...different tune. raining, 30s-40s for temps, heavy winds, and only 3 lifts open.

looks like I made the right call, for Crystal anyway...

I am far too beat up and broken to go skiing today, not to mention that the reports I have heard thus far give me no motivation to leave the house. Massage at 1 today to try to recover the damage and making dinner for Z-bo are about the only things I am game for.
Re: our shitty shitty winter (with exception of Baker), my friend Chad patrols at Sno-crappy and called me this morning. He had left to patrol at 7:00 am this morning from Seattle. Made it as far as North Bend to meet up with other patrollers and carpool...at 10 when he called me they still hadn't made it up the pass and were trying to turn around and head home. Traction tires required even on 4wheel drive because of the freezing rain. The pass and Alpy are closed today...as I said to him "Why are we even fucking bothering to have a winter right now?????"
Back to recovering...Red TR to come shortly. However, the details are a little fuzzy and I may need the help of BC Flow, Baker Boy, MBS, and the non mags who participated in the debauchery to recreate the madness for the rest of you...

The five worst Cascade snow seasons overall since 1950 have been 1962-63, 1976-77, 1980-81, 1991-92, and 2000-2001
Well, you can officially add 2004-2005 to this list as a stong contender.

Anyone else want to bet on how much base we lose this week?

I bet the Summit, Stevens, and Crystal all close for operations by the end of the week if this keeps up

Its kicking the 2000-'01 seasons ass right now! I believe most places (resorts) are coming in at 50% below the 00-01 totals for the middle of January.

I am morbidly curious to see how many areas will still be open come Saturday.

Yes the season officially sucks ass(as if it wasn't the case weather-wise already), I broke 4 ribs at Stevens Saturday. Aid car, Backboard, the works. I skied down to patrol but they were worried about my spleen and other innards. Got some morphine out of the deal tho.

Guess the freezing rain at 14f caused some real havoc up there. Quads were spontaneously side-lining at the loading stations. People stuck on the backside...

I just want to apologize profusely to you guys. Your last bad season was 00-01. I showed up for 01-02, and lived in OR until just this past summer, through the 03-04 season. All great seasons. Then I moved back to CO, and now you have this again.

So, to summarize, over the past 5 seasons, the PacNW snow has been good when I've lived there and has sucked when I haven't, with 100% accuracy.

Just in case you think I'm kidding, you'll notice that it's wetter there this week than it has been (albeit not quite cold enough). Not coincidentally, I arrive in Seattle for work tomorrow, and stay until Thursday. If I had made plans to be in the mountains, the snow level would have been a couple thousand feet lower, I'll bet.

Now, I'll bet you want to know where I'm living next year, don't you? Sorry, haven't gotten that far yet.

I was thinking the same but that inch of freezing rain has my spirits higher. (I cant' believe I just said that.)

With the ice storm we dodged the first wave of moisture and I think it will provide a little bit of protection during the second wave. Now come Wednesday, we're at the mercy of the heavens.

I know. It's looking fucking grim. The NWAC forecast calls for 3-4 inches rain at Baker by tomorrow a.m. and another 3-4 for the following 24 hours. Rain totals slightly less, but still huge in other locations.

When I looked at the Crystal cam late this afternoon I was thinking the same thing as you, Squirrel: they're going to have to shut down.

Nah, they'll ski on a 12" base and charge $45 for one run chock full of crusted dirt

Glad I skipped it today. 39 degrees at the base of Crystal at 6:00 sealed the deal. Once it started raining heavy in Seattle last night I knew we were dead. Warm and wet.

'04/'05 will be an off campus year
