Like I said what they were doing was pointless and stupid. My issue was with tele58 complaining about how it might affect some one under them or in the runout. Being in those locations would be even more stupid than the cornice kickers.

Aaron, since we both agree the actions portrayed on the video were pointless and stupid allow me to clarify the statement which you have taken out of context and used to construct a straw man. IMO these folks demonstrated close to 0.00 situational awareness with this little stunt. Disregard for other mountain travelers is just the tip of the proverbial NFC iceberg. Standing on and kicking a cornice that is cracking all around you and your party is idiotic and is sure candidacy for a Darwin Award. From the looks of it those two were lucky to have avoided a slide for life. It is not a matter of IF this type of behavior will bear consequences but WHEN.

My $0.02 regarding dropping cornices: Im a grey beard and it is generally considered, for a variety of reasons, poor BC etiquette in the circles I travel. Certainly wasnt an acceptable practice encouraged in my intro Avi class back in '84 or in any mountain travel or safety class Ive helped with since.

I woulda' done it as long as I was sure no one was below. Sure, their protocol wasn't by the book. But why do you care? It's not you going for a ride. Yeah yeah yeah, you could have been summoned to the rescue, whatever...

Biggest mistake here was videotaping it so it could be over-critiqued by a bunch of chapped wasatch ass-hats.

I'm glad they did it, now it (w. monitor) can be skied much more safely. Maybe it will help flush the layer of sugar-shit off one of the Park City ridgeline's most dangerous lines.

Cutting cornices is a good skill to have, especially when done properly. It's also fun and gives you an impression of the stability of the snowpack. You're only lying to yourself.

last year right around this time a mountain savvy outdoorswomen toured to the top of a popular peak and walked on a cornice hundreds of feet above the ledge below. unfortunatly she crashed when the cornice gave way and plunged to her death.
    fucking scary way to go

I see nothing's changed here since yesterday, including the stellar epic sick freshnass to be had. We had 5 on the slope today, still nothing. Mountain Mark (that's your new nickname) decided he better submit an ob worthy of UAC standards so we dug a pit. NE aspect at ~9,500 in BCC. 85cm total snowpack, 55cm of that was new storm snow (starting last thursday night or so). There was a tiny discrepancy within the storm, one at 25 cm. Whacked the fuck out of an extended column (that's how I was taught in my avy courses) and nothing. But who gives a fuck anyway, its dangerous out there, stay inside at all costs.

We're all noob jongs, the planet is 4 billion years old. You think Mother Nature gives a shit about what some 'savvy' 'conditioned' fuckwad thinks is good to go. Intuition is good enough to get you through most days of your life, just don't forget it whilst in search of the EPIC.

Oh ya, I forgot to add one of the more pertinent obs of the day. 122 switchbacks were made today, 32 of those being in the headwall.

Any seasoned wasatch mags up for showing an ex-jxn skid around? Looking for touring partners mainly, need some wisdom to keep from killing myself with this kooky snowpack in my first full season in the 'satch. Prefer long tours, steep couloirs, ropework a plus. I'm no spandexer but I try to keep up. Free banana bread and a place to crash on Wasatch blvd near LCC included.
but I know we can't all stay here forever, so I wanna write my words on the face of today...

UDOT will be conducting avalanche control on slopes above the highway in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Stay away from the North side of the canyon from Lisa Falls through Grizzly Gulch until after 0830.

    Thanks,

In other other news, Ksl.com is reporting an avalanche death somewhere between LCC and BCC. Anyone?

I have a sinking feeling that people from this thread might be involved. Thoughts going out to whoever's involved.
