I'll ski the kids carpet 1000 times a day for 3 weeks straight
Help for a non-local?
Ok mags, need some insight. Visiting in late Feb to ski with my brother, but he is not game for the double black, hike to terrain. I skied Taos a few years ago but only scratched the surface and want to go further afield. But some of that terrain you are blind to until you get to it. So I have 4 choices: 1) go for it, 2) blow it off, 3) hire a guide 4) get some friendly TGR local to give advice.
For reference, when I was there the double blacks I skied were Kachina (a lot) - Main Street but also skiers left, to about 1/2 way to Cabin Chute. I hiked to Juarez. And skied Walkyries Chute, Lorelie Trees, North American etc....Nothing between Kachina and Juarez, which looks interesting, nor any of the West Basin. Note that only the first day had any fresh powder, and only 6" or so. I wasn't game for some of that terrain on day 1, and not sure how it would be on the days thereafter with no freshies.
Anyway, hope its a great season out there. Any help much appreciated. Of course anyone who helps and is there the days I am, beverages will be provided!
West Basin and Tresckow Ridge, also Jean’s and Etch’s glades. Upper Hunziker.
Murphy’s on a powder day, but that’s a secrety location. There are more, but my first suggestions should keep you busy.
We haven't had a total wash season in the SW USA since 2017.
Taos needs more snow than Snowbowl though. We get much heavier dense snow over here which gets us covered decently pretty quick.
dirtbag, not a dentist
Taos needs a shitton of snow for the goods to be great. 9k base is generally pretty fluffy stellar crystally. Graupel drops occasionally, which is always a nice cushion at low tide.
I broke a lot of skis at that hill. More at the village, but it was close.
That's a lot of donuts for a remote destination ski resort in the arid south west, especially with a warming climate. If I have the opportunity it's the place I'd like to be skiing at these days. The whole vibe there is special and totally different in the best ways possible.

^definitely. Super cool vibe. Been tempted to pull the trigger on some acreage outside of town.
My bud just sold a really nice lot , with a well, for $300k. He’d held it over ten years and barely made a profit.
