So yeah, maybe take those numbers with a grain of salt.
I wouldn't bet my farm on them.

The storms so far have been sort of warm - pretty good support.

Inbound first week in February with the wife, kid, dog, etc. Never been to Taos, kinda stoked. A couple questions:

    1) Thinking Airbnb for extra space. Is there much to do at the base or is it better to stay in the town?
    2) I have aspirations of hitting Purgatory at some point. Is it feasible as a day drive?
    3) Given how hit-or miss the season has been thinking of flying into Denver to at least have the option to audible to a front range resort. How bad is that drive? Good road, bad road? For reference I do 97/395 from Bend to Reno every year it looks like maybe similar caliber?

Base is kind of dead, town is much more interesting, drive up canyon usually not too bad.

Not really, not worth it. Wolf Creek is much more worthy.

ABQ is your best bet, can hit Ski Santa Fe, Taos, Wolfie easy. Car rental cheaper there too.

I would avoid Denver and that whole shit show if you can. If Colorado Springs works for you check that out. Can still hit those northern CO resorts if you want. I am in South Fork and ski Wolf Creek. I drive down ang hit taos occasionally. It is a 2hr45min. No traffic until Taos easy drive. Not the best year still a lot of New Mexico plates in the Wolf Creek lot. Get in touch if you come to Wolf Creek if you want. I dont know how old your kid is but I can usually find some untracked snow on the mountain .
Question for the Taos mags. Do they update the what's open page on their website? Wondering because I dont see that run in the Byates video being open.

That’s a good question. I haven’t been up yet this season so this is pretty much speculation: They’re usually pretty good at updating - there weren’t many tracks in that video so maybe it was a poach. Or maybe they haven’t been updating well so far this season.

The answer on where to stay is these questions you must answer.

Do you prefer skiing/snowboarding over the second greatest thing you can think of?

Do you prefer quaint shops, restaurants, and art galleries over skiing/snowboarding first tracks at one of the greatest resorts in NA?

Do you like to wake up to bombs going off with 2-3+ feet of snow or a couple of inches or less?

@huskydoc with all this high pressure, I'd recommend staying in town.

Walk to all the shit, see the plaza under construction thats all fucked up, drink coffee at World Cup, eat at ACEQ in Seco, go to Taos Inn. Its way more vibrant than the Ski Valley itself.

If it does snow (god I hope it does), base is only 30 min drive.

We got an amazing house rental near town a few years back. We got a very reasonably priced, huge house with amenities like hot tubs and big screen TV (Super Bowl weekend), 30 min drive to resort. Highly recommend something like that instead of anything near the mountain. Eat at Orlando's.

Fly into Alamosa, rent a car, and then promptly get the fuck out of Alamosa to the north, south, or west.

that is a good suggestion. Now that Denver Air took over it looks like you can actually fly with skis. Apparently there is one rent a car place in Alamosa. I would agree about getting out of Alamosa. However I think one night would be ok to hit Calvillos , sand dunes hot springs and Great Sand Dunes National Park. Especially if the skiing does not improve.

Yep, there is a ton of cool shit within an hour and the driving along that whole north/south corridor is pretty easy. Even if you want to hit the big show it's only 3 hours to I-70 and IME 285/24 is a more enjoyable trip than coming in from the front range.

Ski vacations are - ski your f'n ass off, hit happy hour beer n food, fall asleep early, get up and charge it. Repeat.

It's true that staying up at TSV is fantastic, especially if it snows.

But TSV with the St. B gone ain't what it was and is really Epicski expensive. No more $100/night condos or even the Kandahar cheap rooms.

Between 1985 and 2015, we started just doing the Abominable Snowmansion, getting up early and skiing by 9. But now even that's gotten expensive.

So, the last few years, we just stayed in town at the Sagebrush S of town, launch out of there by 8:00 and skiing by 9:00.

Last year kicked ass, got 2 massive storm days right in a row without the expense of staying in TSV, got the lift 7 rope drop in 20+ inches both days. West Basin chutes were nuts all day.

So yeah, if you've got the coin and the desire to sn00t it up at the Blake, by all means, stay up in TSV.

^ok, valid point discussing finances. But otherwise no way stay in town for me. Drive to town for dinner or whatever, but wakenbake to the lift with no driving is my ideal. Also, I lived in town and up at tsv, so I'm jaded. Moonlight skins were fn awesome. I still miss TSV.

Are you incapable of getting your ass out of bed earlier and getting up to the resort before all the hungover gapers stumble out of their overpriced slopeside lodging?
