I started using tippet ring and may start using swivels on indicator nymph rigs. I also use a tippet ring for a tandem wetfly rig (two soft hackles).
The rings allow one to do two things.
1. Create tie in points where it would be hard to tie two vastly different tippet sizes together (ex. 6x to 3x).
2. Create a tie in point for a dropper.
The downside of the tippet ring is that dropper lines can get tangled up in casts.

One of the great things about fishing with flies is the simplicity. Tippet rings make it less so.
Tippet rings may offer a connection between 3X and 6X, but if you are fishing that kind of rig, the ring will also make a helluva hinge in your loop.
If you are tangling droppers while casting, the droppers aren't the problem. Fix your cast, throw a wider loop.
Aside from preserving the end of your leader, tippet rings are basically supposed to be a time saver, right? If you can't tie on a piece of tippet and a fly in under a minute and a half (should be about half that), try getting better at your knots.
Having said that, I should let you know I've never actually used them.
I use swivels when winter fishing for Great Lakes Steel. Helpful to keep weights at the right level and when dropping leader size in the cold, its much easier to simply tie one knot to the swivel and move on. Of course we can only use one fly and an obnoxious amount of lead. Most wouldn't really call this fish fishing to be honest...
I read an article in some fly fishing magazine the other day where the author mentioned using them. Was wondering if anyone out there was doign the same. Thanks for the feedback.
Andy Burk had an article in California Flyfisher where he uses them for a tandem wetfly rig . I could see the advantage for that set-up where you have two tippets attached at the leader.
Other than that, I tend to agree on the simplicity thing. Just seems like another thing to get in the way.
For the last few seasons, I've quit using tandem nymphs entirely and mostly use large, heavy nymphs that sink so fast I can fish without using shot. Just a leader butt with an indicator and 3x level leader to a heavy fly. I can toss that solo nymph in tight to cover, swim it through structure, jig it along the bottom in green water and maintain a positive feel for the weight of the fly. If the fly can pass as a stonefly nymph on dead drift and a micro streamer when jigged, that's my kind of fly. I miss very few takes, suffer a fraction of the hangups and spend more time catching than rigging and untangling. Plus, it seems to draw more takes from the large fish that are getting more piscavorial in their diet. Tiny flies are about the only time I'll nymph with shot so I don't reckon I would like another hinge on my leader. No to the ring for me, I'd rather toss a streamer.

I have a few furled leaders that use 'em at the end of the furl, kinda nice in that application. Seems like they just complicate matters in a standard leader where a perfection loop can accomplish the same thing...
I am not a fan of Tippett rings
Most of the people I know using them are guides for the ease of adding droppers and changing out tippets once clients mangle them. I'm not a fan personally but I can see the furled leader application. Most indo guys this way use snap swivels for ease of changing tippet, ease of attaching the bobicator, and the free pivot prevents line twist.
I bought several packages of micro rings. After using them several times, I've found them slower and more cumbersome to use.

I'd rather eat a bowl of jello with chopsticks, than
fack with that over engineered crap.
I agree with most here, I can't see where this would help much. Even when I throw 3 flies for surf perch, I like the simplicity of using the tag end of the barrel knot to push the fly away from the line. Why carry extra crap?
