I'm in the process of trying to organize a premier for the new Level 1 film After Dark in NYC somewhere. Initially, I wanted to do it at EMS where I work as a way to promote both the film but the ski shop as well. It is looking like now that I'm going to have a better shot of premiering the movie at a local venue such as a bar.
I'm trying to gauge how much interest the local mags might have in seeing said film. It would likely be in mid-late October. I'd be fronting the costs of the movie so I want to make sure it is something people are actually interested in before I go through with it.
Would come down to where and when for me, I personally would not likely travel into the city to attend.
My 2 cents, if you haven't done so already, would be to figure out the total costs and how many people you would need to break even. I might also look into marketing with some of the local ski clubs if you want to try and raise interest outside of the nyc/nj mags.
Certainly can't speak for the masses, but if it were centrally located (not too far up, down, east or west) on a weekday and started before 8 I'd probably go.
The film can be had for a relatively small cost and it isn't my intention to try and make money off of it. I'm merely trying to organize something fun for a group of people who are excited about skiing. I know of a bar in the east village of manhattan that has a projector screen and would probably be willing to do a happy hour special for people coming to see the film.
Are you planning on buying the DVD and showing it to a bunch of friends or something more formal?
My ski club has shown films a couple of times. They did everything legit. I wasn't involved , but I think it turned out to be a lot of work and didn't net much money.
Here's a list of ski clubs in NY and NJ. http://www.newjerseyskicouncil.org/MemberClubsMain.asp One of them might want to get involved or a good place for a meeting.
I'd be in, depending on locationg. I would shoot for union square-ish area because of the travel options. Maybe Irving Plaza has a space available for smaller events?
There is a bar over on 2nd ave near 14th street that would work well. The upstairs has a huge projection screens as well as screens all over the bar. Since I know the owners, we can get the entire area for the premiere and a happy hour to go along with it. Now just trying to find out if late september or early October works best.
