Twenty-year-old dies from embolism after excessive gaming
By Michael Santo, Tech Buzz Examiner
We've seen warnings about Internet and video game addiction previously, and some horrific behavior (1, 2), as well. In this case, a young man recently died as a result of blood clots associated with marathon gaming sessions.
Chris Staniforth, 20, of Sheffield in England died in May; he died as a result of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), according to an autopsy. He died as a pulmonary embolism when a blood clot formed in his left calf and traveled to his lungs.
His father, David Staniforth said: "After my research I saw there was no difference to Chris sitting at a desk on his Xbox and someone on a long-haul flight.

"Sitting still is literally the danger zone. Chris loved to play and would stay up all night. Millions of people worldwide are playing these games for hours, and there is a risk."
Staniforth was an Xbox 360 gamer. Reportedly, he would sometimes sit for 12-hour gaming sessions. According to his father, "he lived for his Xbox."
Deep vein thrombosis commonly affects the leg veins. Immobilization is a common reason for DVT, as noted on long airline flights, which has its own "syndrome," called traveler's thrombosis.
Microsoft has a Healthy Gaming Guide. That guide warns that "use of game controllers, keyboards, mice, or other electronic input devices may be linked to serious injuries or disorders." The also encourages gamers to take breaks and to lead a healthy lifestyle (which wouldn't include 12-hour gaming sessions).
