    Does this bike exist?

I've been house hunting lately and every time we check out a house, I mentally spec out the bike I'd want to ride to work with from that location. Yes, it does change slightly each time.

However there is one basic design that keeps popping into my head, does someone make this bike:

Steel or Ti frame, rigid fork, road-esque geometry (this is one area where I'm complete JONG, I just test ride and it feels right or it doesn't)

    700c wheels

    disc brakes (for wet weather)

internally geared hub (don't know much about geared hubs either, but would need a pretty wide range of gears, something like my road bike with a hair more on the low end- I just want the simplicity of no deraillers)

Drop or mustache bars- no straight bars

    braze ons for a rack

    ~25lbs or less

Salsa Vaya should meet all of these requirements, although I don't know jack about internally geared hubs.

If you can find a San Jose Roger that would fit the bill, just swap out for an IGH. Spot Ajax or Acme would fit the bill but they're ungodly expensive. Surly Crosscheck is probably your best bet, don't know if you're going to get a bike with an IGH, rack, fenders, discs for 25 pounds though.

Or this, but shipping won't be cheap: http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/CBOOPOMP...petamine-versa

Just a note on internally geared hubs: Those things are ridiculously complicated. Just because you can't see it, doesn't mean they're somehow simpler than a derailleur. Some of the IGH's work well and are fairly reliable, and some aren't. The reliable ones are pretty spendy (rohloff makes nice ones, they're around $1200). The cheap ones are less reliable, don't have a particularly wide range of gears, and weigh a ton (like ~4 lbs, vs. ~2.5 lbs for a cheap hub / cassette / derailleur).

I'm on an older il pompino, with a disk brake up front, drops, fenders, rear rack as my commuter.grocery getter. Fun bike. No disk mount in back, and running it fixed gear. It rocks. Road slicks at the moment, but I toss cross tires on when winter rolls around.

The Civia mentioned above is a sweet bike. Though I think it probably misses the 25lb requirement by a few.

I'm just beginning to see some of the 2012 stuff now and with the new rules allowing cross bikes to have discs your chances of finding what you want are getting better. You'll need to change the bars but the basic bike should be more easily obtainable. If you're not in too much of a hurry wait another month and most of the 2012 spec should be available and I can help you find what you're looking for.
