Feb 26, Mt. Hood Meadows. Cold, bluebird day following two major storm days. Many freshies throughout the AM, becoming increasingly hard to find in the afternoon.
In my quest for further powder piggery, I found a short 35 degree pitch (six turns) of knee-deep fresh...which rapidly become 2" covering rocks. I then performed a Superman -> Scorpion -> Ragdoll maneuver through some more large rocks
The result: Comminuted distal radius fracture of right arm, cracked sternum, dislocated right pinkie finger and hyperextended left thumb. Also took a divot out of my helmet, which given how bad my back hurt the next day, tells me I avoided major brain trauma. No core shots or blown edges either.
Xrays of wrist from mountain clinic after they reset the pinkie...
Repair was classified as Outside Reduction, Internal Fixation (ORIF):
Two weeks after surgery I traded my over-the-elbow cast for a short removable brace so I could start working on range of motion. Six weeks post-surgery doc tells me it's about 70% healed. Got most of the range of motion back and some grip strength. I've also developed a major case of carpel tunnel syndrome and my fingers are like mechanical claws for the first half hour after I get up.
Will maybe get a couple more days on snow this season, although neither wife nor doc are wild about that plan. Hopefully can start riding my mtn bike soon - I need to play outside again.
Sucks man, heal up quick. The scorpion sounds like a nice touch to add to my next fall, lol
I just hammered out my 4th knee injury since last April. 3x's left knee and now my supposedly good knee most likely has no ACL or at least less ACL then When I woke up this morning.
