    All fully equipped. Beacon on airbag not deployed. ( I think I read that in the news)

    This seems very puzzling to me. Talked to an acquaintance who is local to the community and the details seem to conflict on avi equipment. Not turning this into a gram comment section, so... pouring a stiff drink.

    Lawis report says otherwise.

    Here's the full analysis, always something to learn. Includes picture of the debris with all the tracks from sonding. Eerie

    Disclaimer: I am not a local, but I do live in Innsbruck

    I was on the (actually 2nd, but first full) gondola too (would like to link up sometime!). Maybe it's a Nordkette thing, but if there's been obvious large releases due to control work on 2 of the three main runs, and the other one looks pristine, I personally tend to have some restraint. Last winter I was on one of these first gondolas too and people were actually waiting for others to drop at the top, much more civilized than the 25th, but it was the first of the season I guess... Local said direttissima was closed but they didn't say so in the gondola while they usually do... Anyways, it was a scary while hearing from people how many were in the avalanche, seeing the cloud of the 2nd one coming down from Seegrube (reports are contradictory, but I know what I saw). I cooled down getting some turns off the chair and eventually getting a run down Hottinger Alm, which was really nice. Glad all went well at the end.

    In other news, skitouring has been going well in Karwendel the past two days. People are aware that the PWL is less of a problem there** and it's very busy, but snow is good and lines are fun, not many sharks and the lärchen are partially covered so getting out is easy. Forstweg down to Giessenbach is good with only a few rocks in the part cleared by TIWAG so you can ski down to the train station. Awesome.

    Some stoke:

    **: FWIW, I got an ECTP25 for a 70 cm slab resting on facets on the East face of Seefelder Joch yesterday. Evidence of fresh snow avalanches (during snowfall) is relatively abundant, and I've seen debris of a size 1-2 at the exit of one of the couloirs triggered by skiers. We backed out of one yesterday due to wind slabs. People did it today, seems to have gone well. So, it's not bomber, but better than the shitshow further south.

    Huh. They updated that. The missing equipment part is new ?!....( I guess, not sure though maybe I was just fevering around. I read it one or two days ago...when I was lying in bed with a cold ).

    I had read about the probe line in the picture caption (which had confused me...). Makes sense now.

    There is nothing to learn other than that locals are apparently pretty "bold" when going into the Backcountry with their kids

    I thought the Tirol news paper thing had commented something early on along the lines of "experienced locals" bla bla, which was obviously wrong.

    I can't get that report to translate so lacking a lot of detail on my part...

    But heavy windload on an east facing slope after the sun has completely crossed the face; Sun is hard to skiers right.
    Then it looks like the second party tracks across the top to skiers left appears to be the shear line.

    Discussing timing and likely line choices with party 2 would be high on my list of priorities. "Let's locate a safety zone and you guys wait for us to get there."

    I have to watch out what I say.
    I played that game for many years.

    So the patrollers only control nr 5(karrinne)and nr 6(seilbahnrinne)
    All the rest is considered “backcountry”
    If they say don’t ski direttissima or nothing doesn’t matter! It is “free land”

    Got it, thanks.

    That's the same info as you posted yesterday and I thought it was a different account or something.
    I'm def lost in those charts but the issues seem pretty straightforward. I was unaware of the PWL status in the given area and that's a mega factor.

    A warmed-up aspect on a leeward loaded slope is an unfriendly concoction. PWL seals the Faustian bargain.

    Of the 2nd four, the two who went far left then down were on the right side of the ridgeline. Being more left of the ridge crest would have been my choice. They basically ski cut that slope above the two already below them.

    Damn sad. Father and son? That must be soul crushing for their family. And over the Holidays.

    Fuuuck.

    Arriving in Austria Jan 7. Staying in Zillertal till Jan 15, then Zell am See to hit a bunch of resorts 16th-26th. Then based out of Radstadt for 27th-Feb 4. If anyone will be around and wants to get out for some turns, let me know!

    Also going to be in Kitzbuhel for at least the DH, and maybe Super G. And Schladming for both night races. Let the debauchery begin! Can't wait!

    This could be another part of conflicting info. Apparently the group of four was a father with his two kids and their friend. The father and his kids' friend perished. Still a tragedy.

    Uh oh, hoping you get a beast from the east system and get the goods. Check out the restaurant at Landhotel Laudersbach just outside of Altenmarkt, worth a visit in my opinion, quality food.

    Will do.

    Realize that part of the trip will likely be groomer days. Really going to that area for the night races. But hoping to get some decent snow at Krippenstein and/or Dachstein.

    The report was updated and they added the victims transceivers were off and the airbags were not deployed.

    So, as it turns out, they were not savvy locals at all.

    I've skied in a lot of active avy terrain in the states but have only been to Europe twice. I am intrigued by the side/backcountry approach over there. It's generally consistent in the US, in my experience. Maybe the NA avy education experience is more thorough?

    Peepers but no beeping, bags but not deployed.

    Dang.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    @subtle - last time I was there someone said that "euros come to the US for powder and we come to europe for corn."
    That was kind of a kick in the nads. But as I see how things are done there, and the terrain one is on, it makes sense.
    On the train, some older lady asked lindenle where he was from, he says Jackson Hole. She says something like " Oh, the powder capital of the World."
    Yup.
    Hush SLC and Japow...
    Yeah well....im on holiday with the family. So sun and fun trumps ski trip pow. I may have gone elsewhere otherwise. But 3rd and 5th still hold some possibilities. [emoji846]
    Big girl's ski course goes until the 3rd. Everything else is a bonus
    Depending on how long our RV black water tank has some space. [emoji23]
