solo lodging in tahoe
So I'm heading out to Tahoe next month and trying to sort out lodging. I'm heading up with friends so we'll probably just stay at Squaw for the nights they're with me, but then I'll be on my own. Tempting as it is to say fuck it and spend like 200 bucks a night, I'd rather spend the money on more skiing (and I don't have the money). I'll probably be hitting Squaw but would like to pop to Alpine Meadows for Monopalooza.
So, advice on solo lodging? Places to avoid? Places to check out? Stand out cheapies seems to be Tahoe Inn, which sounds potentially sketchy. Tahoe Vistana Inn is a little more cash but seems a bit nicer, and is slightly closer.
Main concern is transportation as I'm also losing a car along with my friends. I guess if the room were really cheap I could rent a car for the days I'll be there by myself. But as long as I can get on a shuttle/bus whatever early enough to hit the lifts at opening and get back to the hotel without cutting my day short I'm down.
And yeah, I searched, but I'm a fucking JONG.

Without any planning done, skiing is a moneypit especially daypasses.
Are you renting equipment too ( that's an orgasm for the ski resorts after raping you for the daypass).
You didn't say if you were driving here or just relying on cabs to get around.

There are a ton of cheap motels around the lake and I've found the quality/cleanliness varies year to year. I would just find one a couple of days prior too your friends departure.
It's pretty easy to hitch from TC to the ski resorts, but if you need a shuttle back to the airport, it might be better to just rent a car?

Ah left out those details.
Driving in Wednesday the 2nd of March AM from SF with two friends, they're bailing Friday (taking the car back). Bringing equipment so I'm good there. Worst case I can get somewhat discounted day tickets so it shouldn't be too bad of a raping there. I mostly just need to figure out the lodging (either a 5 day at a rate I can afford after they leave or split between staying at Squaw and then by myself in TC or whatever for the other 3 nights).
I'll need to catch a shuttle to the Reno airport to catch a flight to SLC Monday night. Shuttles to Reno seemed pretty reasonable, though. I'm guessing the cheapest car rentals would be in Reno, would be inconvenient to have friends take me over there to pick up a car but I guess that's not a terrible option if it'd make my 4 days of skiing more enjoyable than hitching or busing.
Seems like decent options around the 100 dollar a night range in Tahoe City. Looking like the best option and won't have to bother with a car. Probably will book something out tonight or tomorrow so if there's any places/areas I should definitely avoid let me know!

Tahoe Inn isn't that bad. Its about the same or a little better than Motel 6. We stay there if we don't want to drive back to south shore.

I've stayed at the Americas Best Value in Tahoe City twice. It was fairly cheap (~75/night?) and a totally fine motel.

The Motel 6 in South Lake is only $45/night. Average room, but hell of a lot cleaner room than the Super 8 down the street.

Harrahs in Reno has a shuttle to Squaw. I got four nights there this Friday-Tuesday for 200 total on Expedia. I don't know if the shuttle is free but it's an option vs. a car. Supposed to be a good steak house in the casino.
Not Tahoe City, but if the shuttle works for you, you're covered.

Reno is probably your best bet for crazy cheap last minute lodging if you don't want to mess with a rental car. I've stayed at terribles for like 40 bucks. The casino is exactly that but everything else is fine - i can gaurantee they don't have a shuttle to squaw though. Harrahs sounds like a deal.
The shuttle ride will be more than an hour each way, but if you're not driving and can snag a seat it's not really that big of an issue. Also, if you're on a budget squaw every day might not be your best bet.

what is completely bizarre about this whole thing is I think my friend from Boston is coming up the same weekend.
nevermind you're from NYC. Not sure why I thought Boston. Anyway he's in the same boat so please post up what you figure out after you're booked.

I bet you can get a room at the Atlantis for $25 online and I believe there's a Squaw shuttle from there.

Yeah I just got off the phone with the slopeside places. It's looking like 3x the cost of staying in Tahoe City at least. We'll prolly do Tahoe City until they leave.
If I can rent some floor space and bum rides to Monopalooza the rest of the weekend that'd be amazing. Who's in charge of that? Scott?

I'm not against it by any means, but what's up with the disproportionate amount of consumption among monoskiers?

Not sure if youre cool with living with a bunch of people, but we live in a ski lease house with like 5 beds in a room and i think the kid in charge wants $20-25/night. Go to Squaw every single day for work or to ski, so rides wouldnt be an issue either. Live like 3 blocks from the bus too. I know some of the ski leasers flaked on us, so if youre at all interested send me a PM and I can show pics of the place or whatever. . . . .
