As it is, I look at the photo and I have this unresolved anxiety: what's above & below the helicopter?
The heli shot was a lucky accident. I only took it so our kids could tease their mom about quitting after lunch. Once I had a chance to look at it I liked it a lot more than I expected to. I think it captures the mood of what a typical pickup is like (nestled down in a valley, powder cloud, wallowing around in deep snow, etc.).

Thanks, everyone, for the compliments. I'm pretty psyched that you see improvement. I like these pictures much better, too. This thread has been super helpful.

Here's one more from the last trip. My wife really likes it, but I'm not so sure. What's the collective verdict?

i think the exposure could afford to be bumped up a little. Did you crop it? i think it would be a bit nicer if you could see the tops of the trees with maybe a touch less snow on the bottom

Exactly my same thoughts as soon as I saw the photo.
Bump the exposure a bunch, snow is supposed to look white!

Tops of trees are not available, but I changed the crop a bit to show less snow at the bottom and bumped the exposure by a stop. It's definitely better. Thanks.

that looks better imo. The old rule of Thirds is not a bad rule to follow sometimes plus it sets a backdrop to show lots and lots of fluffy treed snow. Which CMH?

Hells yes! AWESOME, huge improvement on an already good photo.
You can almost see the dude's smile now, and the improved lighting & crop makes it so that the 'lines' of trees on the left and right side of the skier create a converging tunnel which is a really cool effect imho!

First half of the trip we did a program called Nomads which lets you ski multiple tenures. We stayed in the Gothics lodge and skied Monashee, Gothics, and Revelstoke terrain.

Second half of the trip was CMH Kootenay, out of Nakusp. The terrain there consistently kicks butt.

That's so cool; I've never heard of Nomads but I'm supposed to be covering some heli-assisted ski touring (CMH Adamants and also at TLH) so am curious about the terrain. Adamants is reputedly meadow-skippy but the terrain in your shots looks way more fun.

and yes - have to agree that your shots are really improved - better composition, lighting, timing. Really cool to see and hope you put up more shots from the trip as I'd love to see what the terrain looks like as well as enjoy the shooting.

Lee - instead of cluttering up this thread, I'll make a "fat old guy heli-ski" TR in the main forum. It might take me a day or two to get it done.
