    Snowboard Vids?

Looking for a good snowboard flick for my little bro for Xmas, but I have no idea what any of the good videos are. He's into snowboard specific films (i.e. not TGR). Prefferably some good backcountry big air/trick type stuff... I happened to see a pretty good one with a song from the new Modest Mouse song on it, but I have no idea what it was called...anybody know?

I haven't seen the '04-'05 selections yet (anybody wanna hook a brotha up?), but after years of buying snowboard flicks, I have come to the conclusion that there are a few companies worth buying (+ TGR, 'cause their snowboard footage, though limited, is usually the best - and can usually be found in other companies' movies). In no particular order:

    1. "Pop" - Absinthe Films - Absinthe typically has more focus on European riders. Interesting angles and consistently strong footage. I've noticed that Victoria's TGR footy shows up in Absinthe Films.

    2. "Lost in Transition" - Standard Films - Standard are the OG's of snowboard films. Lost in Transition is their 14th film. Standard went a little stale for a few years, but seems to be making a comeback. Good mix of big mountain and jibby stuff. Jeremy Jones' TGR footage shows up in the last couple of Standard's films.

    3. "Afterlame" - Robot Food - Robot Food are the new kids on the block, but they hit the ground running. Afterlame is Robot Food's 3rd film, and the first 2 got serious raves and both received "movie of the year" in the snowboard mags. Much more jibby than Standard's and Absinthe's movies, but (and this is from someone who hates jib flicks) somehow they make it work. Always great sountracks, Robot Food is know for putting the "fun" back in snowboard flicks (makes you feel like you are watching your friends), and all of the other companies have made noticiable changes to their style as a result.

Honorable Mention - "Perception" - First Tracks Productions - A friend of mine started this company and "Perception" is their second offering. When he sent me a copy, I was worried that I would have to lie about what I thought - I didn't. Although a smaller film without the resources of the big boys, I really liked this movie. Don't expect a TGR type (or even Standard, Robot Food, or Absinthe) type film with helis and expensive production, but if you are into supporting smaller companies, or Tahoe companies, or up-and-comers on a shoestring budget, this is the film to get. I expect FTP to be competing with the bigger companies in just a few years.

Previous years' movies: If you aren't dead set on this season's films, these are a few that I think should be in everyone's collection:

    1. "Afterbang" - Robot Food ('02-'03). A little jibby, but like I said, they make it work really well. This film changed the way snowboard companies were making films. It should be in every snowboarder's collection.

    2. "Best of the TB Series" - Standard Films ('03-'04). Every year for 10 years, Standard named its film "Totally Board" (1-10). This movie is an awesome look at the best work in those ten films. Any snowboarder with a sense of history for their sport should see this film.

    3. "Subjekt Haakonsen" or "The Haakonsen Faktor" - Terje Haakonsen is snowboarding's Michael Jordon. He rules it without even trying. "Subjekt" is tough to find these day, and I haven't seen it on DVD. "Faktor" was recently re-released on a DVD called "The Snow Files", which also included "Underworld." (DJ) Greyboy was hired to do the soundtrack for "Faktor." These films have soul, but probably wouldn't appeal to riders who want to see today's biggest names.

I would stay away from films from 'Kingpin Productions' and 'Mack Dawg Productions'. When the jib scene hit big, these guys were the shit, but I've never liked their films. 'Kingpin' folded this year because their head honcho was over it and is now directing commercials and music videos. 'Mack Dawg' apparantly made a super-shitty film this year ("Chulksmack") which looks like its even getting bad reviews from jib kids.

i've seen most of the new videos from this year. The video with the modest mouse song is pop by absinthe films. its probably the best video from this year. The robotfood video this year went with more of a location/interview style instead of rider parts. its still good, but not as good as their other vids, and not as good as pop. i haven't seen positron (wildcats video) or chulksmack (mack dawg) yet but i doubt they would be as good as pop. travis rice does a double cork 1080 over chads gap in pop.

in summary, buy pop by absinthe films.
