    Video Editing Software

I was just wondering what video editing software you guys you. I have been using Windows Movie Maker only to find out that it comes out formatted in MSWMM File. I cant find a website that allows you to upload a MSWMM File and I can't convert it.

    Look up format factory.

Change that wmv into anything you want. It's free.

Can't speak for PC's but if you have a MAC get Final Cut Pro and learn it, you'll be plenty happy with it.

You'll get a little more leeway in what you can do with clips both in editing and output settings.

As to the OPs question, you don't need to spend 100 bucks just to change a file format.

Not better, you will just learn to hate different things about it.

WSWMM is not a type of movie file, per se. You don't need a format converter to save the movie file either, it can just be saved to your desktop as a WMV. The WMV can be converted.

Edius 6. Score a huge discount on the Educational version if you have somebody in the house that qualifies. It's complex, but pretty much does it all.

You get what you pay for. Final Cut Express 4.0 $199 shipped, if that makes you broke maybe you should sell your camera

They better have a pretty good edu discount because Edius has never been and will never be worth $750. If I was spending small money on any NLE for a windows machine I would go with Premiere Pro CS5. Then I would go with Avid MC. And then, well, that's it unless I decided to switch to linux or OS X.

Not saying other apps aren't capable, but if you are going to put money into something, may as well get the better solution for better cost. And Edius is NOT ever a better solution for the money.

Wow! Ouch...ouch! Settle down there. I'm by no means in love with it. I ended up with the first version years ago and got sort of used to it. I rarely use any editing apps these days, so I just need something for occasional use. I was considering buying the new Panny TM700 which outputs 1080p and I know Edius can edit 1080p, so I fgured it's more than worthy for $158.

What can't it do exactly that the average novice video schmuck like me will need? Is there a good reason to spend double that? Matter of fact, for $100, Edius Neo does almost all the same things.

Yeah, it's not the most intuitive program for sure and I don't like the audio editing very much, but I think it doesn't exactly suck for the price if you don't mind learning the clunky interface.

A bit of a difference there eh

Final Cut Pro =/= Final Cut Express.....

I've heard good things on the Adobe on PC...

    edit to add:
I use FCE 4.0 and love it... except no 720 60 frame timeline....

What I said was they need to make the discount viable for it to be usable. $158 bucks, I see no problem with using it. But for $725 retail which is what B&H charges, I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. For less than half that ($300) you can have Premiere Pro CS5 which rocks Edius socks.

If it works, go ahead and $158 is mad cheap. But if someone wants to grow into things, there are far more plug-ins and accessories for major players like Adobe, Apple and Avid.

I used to have to test Edius when I worked for Boris FX. That and Media100 single handedly burned me fucking out on that job. And this was when I was also testing on Premiere before it was premiere pro or CS. Fuck that job sucked in retrospect, but it did teach me almost every NLE under the sun.

Yeah, I sort of wish I had the extra $200 to get CS5, but shiite, with new skis and all...
Anyhow, I did mean to mention that the Panny TM700 has 1080p @60fps and looks ridiculously insane. Edius 6 can edit it, but I guess others can too, although I'm not sure on that or how important it really is.

Yeah that's certainly not unique to edius.

For sure there's a difference, but honestly do most people really need all the features FCP 7 has to offer. Pretty sure most of the vids posted on here don't have multiple layer's of uncompressed HD with 16 audio tracks. In the end best thing to do is get some cheap software see if you like or even have the time to edit and go from there.

I dunno - I use Edius here at work on our laptop and it's fucking solid, meaning it never crashes, unlike our dedicated Avid Xpress machines. It also plays very well with any format we've thrown at it, from straight P2 to .avi, .wmv, and .mp4. Renders to just about anything you need and does so relatively quickly. Not a resource hog, either.

Then again we do very simple 2 track 16x9 SD edits (it's news, not a fucking Magnum Opus) so I'll defer to your judgment regarding wider ranging capabilities.

So I have been using a free (any video converter) and windows movie maker to edit. Not happy at all with the results as it comes out pretty choppy and dark looking, not even close to the unedited/unconverted raw footage from contour HD.

Is there any free stuff that will do the job better? Got some good footage over last weekend up at Valhalla pow and want to do good edit for the cat.

Try the free 30 day fully functional trial of Edius 6: http://www.grassvalley.com/products/edius_6

You have nothing to lose and it will do anything you need it to. It can be a little confusing, but it does work very well. Not saying there aren't better free trials out there, I'm just not familiar.

You have nothing to lose by giving this a shot, it's a pretty high end program.

If the original footage is smooth, it can certainly be preserved and exported smoothly (and brightened, etc), if you still have the original files. That's certainly worth spending some quality time on editing!

Cool, thanks. Just frustrating when you edit it all together then it turns out like shit!

I will give that a try. Does that program convert as well? My problem might be at the conversion stage....? going from mov to wmv.
