WHOA...Pujols to Angels. Along with CJ wilson. That's a decent team right there.

You figure they're going to make some moves to dump salary and excess in positions... I'm guessing Ervin Santana will be dealt along with maybe Kendrys Morales. You just know they want someone to take Vernon Wells' ridiculous money, too.

At least now Poo-holes won't be struggling at first base when he's 45 at the end of his deal- now he'll be the full time DH.

    This...for sure.

And, Ortiz to stay with the Sox in 2012.
You should have been here yesterday!

Fucking owners deserve themselves. Look at ARod disintegrating well before his contract is up, and they give Pujols a ten year deal fit for a king. Madness. Could have stayed in SL for 200 mil. Now he'll be getting booed in Anaheim when he becomes a DH in a few years. How much fucking money do you need?
I'm so tired of this shit. Every sport just screams stupid greed.

He's not going to get booed as the DH when he's putting up 35 HR and 120 RBIs every year.... as a DH, he should be able to do that.

at 42-45 years old? It doesn't really matter much though, he's probably worth 35M/year to them for the next 3 or 4.

CJ seems like a pretty decent deal. Burnett/Lackey money for a guy that isn't totally cringeworthy every fifth day.

Dude, please, go back and read some baseball history. Odds are, his career is almost over. He's not fucking Superman. We all get old. Sure, he has a few good years left, but ten @ 25 mil per??

He's going to turn 32 in January which means when is contract is up he will be 42. Where are you idiots getting 45 out of this? And yes, he will be an old DH in a few years. He will be good for his age but he will still be old for baseball. Paying a 42 y/o DH 25M is asinine. So is paying DO $14M for another season with the Red Sox.

I think it has something to do with the decade or rumors about his age that have never been fully addressed. Not that he needs to, but because he came to America before 9/11 his birth certificate never got the full scrutiny of the more recent latin players or the POTUSA.

First off, how many players in baseball history have put up numbers like Pooholes? We're talking about a guy who's making history, not one that's repeating it. Look, I'm not saying he's going to put up numbers like he's been for the next ten years... I'm in the same boat as you there. I do think that he'll be more than serviceable in the second half of his deal, when he can be a full-time DH and just hit for a living. Look at Edgar Martinez- and Pooholes is much better than Edgar. It helps that he's a first baseman too, which will minimize the wear and tear on his body over the next 4-5 years of playing over there.

That being said, I think any 10 year deal is stupid when it means the player's going to be making $25MM a year when he's 40+ yrs old. The Rockies/Dodgers/Brewers have it right (in this case, at least)... give out the big deals when your own player is 25, that way he's only in his early to mid thirties when the contract's done.

Dude, you need to visit Cooperstown someday. That, and ask for the Bill James abstract for Xmas.

I also think he's one of the lucky ones to not get caught in the steroid era. Now that they'll be testing for HGH, old guys won't have that medicine to make it to 42.

    Been there, thanks.

So we're talking what, five other guys? Three maybe?

    when he's 42, $25m a year probably won't seem like much

You see, that's the problem here. Only in the world of sports, specifically recent MLB free agent contracts, because NBA players, rightfully so, may argue, can the whole 80s to 90s to aughts attitude about wage inflation and, well, "future earnings will just pay for all of this' for celebrities still exist, because, well, it's the last vestige of capitalistic ponzi thinking. Starting in '08, the developed world economies have started to crumble and shrink, and, by the looks of what's going on in Europe, are only at least half way to the bottom. Money is shrinking dramatically. Odds are very high that you, overall, are worth less and/or make less than in '07. To a creditor, I mean. But these owners and their accountants act like their media contracts will just double and triple like they did over the last few decades, and, maybe, somehow, the luxury boxes and common seat prices will just show 10% a year inflation like your son/daughter's college tuition. (that's a whole other bubble on it's way to bursting) Thing is, in the two major markets, there are two teams just staggering from the side effects of that thinking (Mets and Dodgers), and that's just the start. Where will this money come from? There are no more Bernie Madoffs or Lehman Brothers or German bankers buying scams from Goldman. And, at the same time, cable, which has funded the last fifteen years of this stupid inflation, is looking at a murky future of young people watching TV on their I Phones, and laughing at 29.95 subscription deals to one team. The sports bar down the street takes care of that.

Anyway, I thought of a few things in the gym. LA is much kinder environment to a star hispanic family like his than SL, and, hey, like Pete Rose said when he signed his late career Phillies contract, "Sold to the highest bidder. I didn't even have to ask".

"Do I want to be in St. Louis forever? Of course," Pujols said. "Because that city has opened the door to me and my family like no other city is ever going to do. I don't want to [go to] any other city, but if that time comes I'm pretty sure wherever I go they are going to do the same way -- hopefully, open the doors. But I don't think it's to be anything compared to St. Louis.

"People from other teams want to play in St. Louis and they're jealous that we're in St. Louis because the fans are unbelievable. So why would you want to leave a place like St. Louis to go somewhere else and make $3 or $4 more million a year? It's not about the money. I already got my money. It's about winning and that's it. It's about accomplishing my goal and my goal is to try to win. If this organization shifts the other way then I have to go the other way."
Not that I'd expect any different from a pro athlete, but it's still fun to point out the hypocrisy.

That has to be the most idiotic statement I've heard from an athlete, and that's saying something. Guy wins 2 championships in 6 years and claims he's not with a winning team? Hell, they're likely setup for a 3rd soon with that starting rotation. Like anyone with half a brain believes it's not about the money and not about being the highest paid player at his position. Gotta feed the ego. Have fun in the AL where it won't be so easy to coast into the playoffs.

The guy has put up amazing numbers for sure. Definitely one of the greatest hitters in the history of the game.

#30 on all time BA list. 30. No way he's going much higher than that. Probably end somewhere close to 300 BA.

#37 on all time HR list. Lucky to get to 600, at his age. But then again, I guess that's his and the Angels reason for this. Home runs, no matter how meaningless, sell.

Of course the money is obscene and he's a egomaniac like all the rest of them but it's crazy to think he doesn't have plenty of life left. He's the youngest NL player to hit 400 (2nd all-time after A-Rod), he's gonna be around for a while yet. "Lucky to get to 600, at his age" doesn't even make sense in that context.

You invoke the name Bill James earlier in the thread and now quote BA as a measure of a player's worth? Shame on you.

He's 18th all-time in OBP (tied with Mickey Mantle) and 4th in SLG (only Ruth, Williams and Gehrig higher).

Whole lot harder to take career extending drugs these days, so no more Bonds and Clemens. That is the #1 reason HR numbers soared. Then again, if Selig ignores test results....

Yeah, but, those numbers will be so diluted in ten years. Re: Ortiz.
