    Rochester NY - $$$binding mount

Came up in another forum. The local (only) shop want's $80 to mount and test if you didn't buy the gear there. The local hill want's $70. Both say $25 if you bought your gear there but if I laid out $900 for boots, bindings and skis (never happen) I'd take up platform tennis before I'd give them another $25 for that. Sounds high. Anyone know some place reasonable or is this the going rate all over? I mount my own and don't fall so not an issue for me.

Let me guess, Ski Company? I've never been to their Rochester shops, but their Syracuse shop makes my skin crawl whenever I enter it.

I'd say head west and scope out someplace in Ellicotville, lots of shops there.

If you head south east think I paid ~40 for a mount at a place in Ithaca.

most shops do this to compensate for the business that they lose to online retailers who can sell products at much lower prices with much lower costs as well. You probably save 200-300 on the ski set up if it was purchased online so don't sweat another 80...but try to support a good local shop

edit. most shops will include mount and release check in price of skis so that $25 i agree is high

That's the one and only. Was in there this week and in the used section they had skis with Salomon S900's with no AFD's and the "manager" had no clue what "indemnified" meant. I'm sure they have a good tech, but then they have another five. I'll pass along you Ellicottville suggestion. Thanks.

I'd also agree with what EC_Tech said, it's worth paying if it's a good local shop.

That ain't the Ski Company by a long shot

Agree with the go local if you can. Paid $40 to have Dynafits mounted on $99 Shuksan's I got off the net. Could have done it myself. No testing needed with those though. I do try to buy SOMETHING every time I'm in a GOOD shop kicking tires. When I bought my first new boots in 40 years from the shop in question, I was asked if the felt good and did I like the color. Seriously.

for $80 you can buy all the tools necessary to mount the skis yourself (including a drill), and still have a bit of cash left over for beer.

I have even heard of shops charging $25 just to try on boots. You really can't blame them with the way the internet has turned retail upside down. Shops here in Bozeman are charging $75 for a mount these days, but it's generally free if you buy the gear there. I'm more surprised that your shop actually charges $25 for the mount if you buy the skis in house.

I grew up skiing at Swain. I hear they shut down recently, but I have also heard that someone got things back up and running. What's the story there? I have many great memories of thursday night ski club, sneaking around Ben Blakely and Dozey Doe in the dark.

Don't know who to recommend in Rochester, but I can recommend that you don't give Ski Company a penny. They screwed up the one mount I had done there and then argued with me about it. Fuck those guys.

It sound ridiculous to charge for trying on boots. Until you realize that they are desperate and tired of people coming in to size boots then going home to order a pair online for hundreds less. Its a catch 22 really, because I see their rationale for doing so, but it has to drive away the few remaining customers.

I can't even try on boots in my size. No small store will carry anything above size 29 usually.

Snow country was bought out by the ski company and is now called "snow". I think I paid $50 to have bindings mounted 3 years ago on boards not purchased there. I did buy boots from them last year, so I do try spread it around. Besides, they do not carry skis I want to ski on. Muxworthy's is gone, but Glen Muxworthy is at the ski company and knows what he is doing. He is the only one that seems to be able to do repair work other than throw the skis through the tune machine.

I grew up in Rochester. I worked at Gary Muxworthy's before it shut down. We would charge $25 if you bought the gear there as well. Snowcountry was the same.

If you want to be an idiot and try mounting your own shit then go for it. Might cost you a $700 pair of skis. I don't know what it is now but back then you had to take all the binding courses with Marker and Salomon etc before you were allowed to mount. So most of the guys that used to do it weren't complete dumb assess and had some skills. That costs money to train and ski shops should be able to charge for it. It's 25 bucks get over it.

REI does it for $25 if your a member. I think its $40-50 if you are not. Worth buying the membership for the difference.

Yup, not a single REI in the empire state

Seriously, just drive out to Ellicotville, that town probably has more ski shops than any other municipality in the state.

Swain will reopen this year. A local Bizillionaire owns a palace the backside of the mountain and anted up to stave off a condo development. Never skied there but intend to this year. $40 all day midweek for geezers.

DIY mounting is the way to go if you are at all handy, take the time for a little research and drink the bear after your done. On the other hand, if your the type that has only a butter knife and scissors in your tool kit, it's probably best to pony up. Do a quick google on mounting your particular binding , bring in a dozen donuts with you and insist on personally handing them to the techs while you ask a question or two. They'll remember you when they do the mount. Probably, but you've upped the odds

hugh your offering some really good advice too. like how your just in here to analyze people's comments. you've provided some solid advice. it's 25 bucks. the equivalent of a few beers on a night out. most people aren't willing to drill their $500+ skis without a jig, never having done it before. but whatever man maybe you and your buddy at the top are

Rochester is an hours drive from Ellicotville and then an hours drive back. That's going to cost you $25 bucks in gas, plus the opportunity cost of doing something else, + your still going to have to pay for the mount.
