    Question Canon S95

Its time to upgrade the old point and shoot. The Canon S95 has some amazing reviews (especially David Poque - http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/...0S95&st=Search , who I generally trust)

Any mags using this cam? (Not looking to being talked into a SLR, but open to some of the other high end P&S options).

I've been thinking this is a pretty great ski camera option. I still wish it had an optical viewfinder.

I've loved the past few months with my LX-5. It has a stupid wide (24mm), fast (f2.0) lens and the picture quality is unreal.

    Here's a recent comparison.

I've been happy with my S90 thus far. Have yet to take it skiing, keep forgetting to grab it.

I have a Lumix FZ I really like and gives great results, so I would go that way again but still no goddam viewfinder.

Am I the only person who has a hell of a time seeing the screen when trying to shoot outdoors in any kind of tricky light conditions like, uh, snow? How are you supposed to compase when you can't see what the camera sees?

I gave one to my wife. I use it all the time, works great fits in your pocket, takes great pictures and HD video. I'd recommend it. BH Photo had it on sale yesterday for a few dollars off.

s95 is the shit. There's an extensive S90 or S95 thread around here somewhere.

The LX5 is technically slightly better for performance and wide angle, BUT the ease of use and fact the S95 is significantly more pocketable makes it the best P&S on the market, IMO. Pouge is absolutely correct. I get better pics from my S90 than I ever got from my LX3, which was technically better. When you're doing the side by side, just keep saying to yourself "ease of use."

I prefer my S95 to my LX3 too. The ring is a super fast & nice way to do exposure compensation (better than the menus on the LX3), and the continuous shooting is better. The LX does a bunch of shots over the course of a second or so then stops. The S95 does one per second indefinitely.

Also I'm down on the LX because if you keep it in a chest pocket it likes to turn around so the lens faces you, which then bruises your ribs if you manage to fall on it. This happened to me twice and hurt for months both times.

I just bought an S95 to use primarily for skiing and biking. It's been great so far. Also considered the LX-5 but it was just too large to have with me all the time.

    Go for the S95.
