That didn't take long. hahaha
Guess i should get my gear together.
Doesn't look like quite the opener that last year was. But there is still a week to go![]()
just the village or village and creekside?
Where's this bitch known as El Nina?
looks like a well timed dump could be on its way

keep making sacrifices to the almighty...all hail Ullr!
what the new pay parking like? Is there going to be a half-hour line to pay for parking on opening day?
just go into lot 1-3, park, go to pay kiosk (there are tons) punch in liscence plate number, pay for parking, no need for a ticket in your car, its all based on your plate number, a vehicle with cameras drives around taking pictures of everyone's plate, and if your plate number is not in the system you get ticketed/towed.....its $8 a day in the winter, $12 in the summer....or park for free in lot 4-8 or creekside...
So wanna be there for the opener, but my physio says I need to wait till Xmas. In recovery mode from mtb injury (rotator cuff & bicep tear).
Any word on what the current base is right now?
I went and checked out the Peak 10 days ago.
Mellow lap down the saddle, alpine had some decent snow.West Cirque was loaded up pretty good(naturally cleaning itself) and we had some sweet turns. Once you hit treeline it was complete garbage.
Rained up to treeline all day today.
Alpine could be good after this cycle finishes and we get some sun next Sunday/Monday
Oooh, I just saw this thread having already posted in Snow in the PNW. I may be tempted to fly down for the open as we are getting nothing in Japan and it is a long weekend coming up. Would it be worth it do you think?
Don't get too excited guys. I love opening day, and I'm as excited as anyone, but the view from the webcam/valley is pretty decieving. I skied in the alpine on Blackcomb this week, and there isn't really all that much snow up there, especially below treeline. I'm guessing it will probably be Red and Emerald chairs only for opening day (as usual) From what I saw when I was up the other day (Wednesday), it will be OK where the snow making is, but almost completely unskiable everywhere else. Absolutely 100% rock ski conditions. It's not the white ribbon of death, but there's no need to fly in from Japan either!
Above treeline is definately better, but even then only the glaciers are really good to go. IF (and it's a big if) conditions allow for hiking above the Roundhouse, that will be where the good skiing is. If not (avi conditions sometimes preclude any hiking on opening day) then the lower mountain will a full three ring circus.
My prediction: Standard opening day gong show: 10 000 people trying to ski 6 runs down to Red and Green. People will ski grass, people will ski rocks. People will end their season doing something stupid the first day of the season.
I'll be there, but I live here. I'd probably give it a miss if I had to drive from any further than Van.
When I get up for a better look around this week I'll give you guys my standard preseason beta. Probably Wednesday or Thursday.

Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature... Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. -Helen Keller
Ahhh yes the classic W/B "Early" Opening. It should be a time.
Since I'm living up here, I figured now is my chance to line up really really early and praise Ullr in the gondola line until opening with a bunch of friends. We'll bring a small tent, a stove, some whiskey and whatnot. Thinking midnight-ish. Hell, I don't even know if I'll ski one lap since I got a menisectomy a week ago but I just want to get up there! I assume we won't be the only ones doing that?
the keeners last year were there at 11pm the night before, but man has opening day gotten crazy, in 1999 my first year here, we arrived at 7am at the bottom of Wizard and we were 3rd in line, now you show up at that time and the line up is already to the Longhorn patio.....
