Marshal, looks like pu = cheap for scarpa people.... All their pu versions of pebax boots (eg tempest for typhoon, pegasus for maestrale, etc) have cheap liners....

that is fine. i just don't want such a thin and soft upper cuff. you cannot get the buckles tight enough to hold your foot in their while skiing without deforming the cuff at the upper buckle. i tried putting a race boot front spoiler in there, and it fixed the issue, but then it interfered with the tounge and pushed it over to the side.

i want to make the upper cuff out of carbon. hmm.

not just scarpa - the garmont shogun is a PU version of the radium and comes with a crappy(er) liner and a significantly smaller price tag. i don't really get it - as far as i can work out the only advantages of pebax are that it is a bit lighter and it is easier to put on pebax boots if they have been sitting in a cold bootroom all night

Well, as a plastic pebax is lighter and more expensive than pu..... Hence the policy of at boot makers. But there is clearly room for improvment

How did you raise the bootboard in the shell? I think this would help mine a bit as the heel pocket is a bit too large. otherwise they fit pretty much perfect with my power wraps

The majority of ski tourers consider the two factors you mention to be very very important. For your second point consider that many people would use Pebax boots for overnights and not a cold bootroom.

Having said that, Mobe is a slackcountry boot and marshal's point is a good one. Slackcountry day tourers probably wouldn\t care so much about weight (people put up with the brick that is the Factor and many people also tour in big heavy skis and bindings) and many day tourers would also put on warm boots. So it is a good suggestion to maybe have a PU version of Mobe

Fire up your google, there are some great tutorials on how to make wicked stuff from carbon.

also, the oot bed of the liner is fairly thick (7mm) and will over a handful of ski days thin out to 1-2 mm... so stick with it. 5mm foot drop is a huge amount of space.
using the alpine tounge, but good to know.
those 7mm are for the smaller halfsizes right? so the 26.5 have 7mm and 27.0 have 5mm?

Its probably been posted here already, but has anyone used the Mobe in the Duke? I have been trying to get my brother's sz 27 boots with sz small dukes, the length is fine, the heel seems too high for the binding to clamp down on it. yes, we've played with the toe height adjustment and still nada. Any ideas???

have the same problem, but my heelblocks are 3mm to high, work fine on dynafiddles though, which I got them for

For the record, I'm using my 27.0 mobes with small barons with no problems. They lock in and release fine.

Using Mobe size 26.5 in dynafits and Dukes (Dynaduke plates.) works fine. The Dukes take a bit of a firm push to lock the heels down.

Not sure what you meant by "the heel seems too high for the binding to clamp down on it."

clarification the heel on the mobes seems to be too tall for the duke to clamp down all the way. What modifications have you done suntoucher?

What is the correct position for the tongue? I've been debating this with myself for a while. The tongue on my typhoons seem to deflect toward the inside unless I hold them centered (raised, textured section to the center of the boot) while buckling. If I let it fall into place naturally, it seems to align well with the inside edge of my downhill ski, which makes sense that you'd want the boot to have the most power in that "vector".

I've noticed this with the Typhoon, and almost to a fault. I fiddle with these on the first few runs more then I ever have with any other boot.

    Lee/Marshal/Summit,
Have any of you skied both the Typhoon and Mobe with the touring tongue, and can comment on the flex comparison. I imagine the Mobe will be more stout, but does it come anywhere close to the Stiff tongue/Typhoon combo. I really like the more progressive feel the typhoon has with the black tongue, but it's too soft for inbounds.

been doing some experimenting, and i know at the least adam would benifit from this.

i would strongly suggest checking the canting and if you are used to alpine boots, just going for the max lean angle right off the bat. definately helps retain the heel and keep you on the shovel of the ski.

if you are having heel lift issues, put ankles pad on the liners. really helps take up space.

i did this and felt that i still needed to over tighten the upper buckles (see above ranting about PU), and after some playing, i found that the tounge of the boot was not that anatomical right at the fold of the ankle, where foot bend to shin, and that there was a huge amount of space/liner foam between my ankle fold and the top of the shell. i was really cranking the upper buckles to try and get this tighter to suck the tongue in as tight as possible, but this was a loosing battle, creating cramps etc. so i put a ton of mid-soft foam there to take up the space. i will probably experiment with denser foam, but didn't have any handy.

wow. big difference. much much better now.

i think the boot, with jsut effort, but no significant wieght gain is getting close to being equal to an alpine boot, with the weight and space in the forefoot of an AT boot.

    starting to get stoked again.

    pic of the tongue.

note 3 layes, all getting narrower and more specific to the location needing the most reinforcement.

do plan to use thinned and more dense stuff possibly in the future, but did not have it available.

Are you making the duct tape/foam piece available as a kit?

i just got some denser boot fitting foam from larson's in town here. really feeling good. much better than the soft stuff in there. will ski a few laps on my way thru summit today. and report back.

but i can say this mod, without question, will dramatically reduce heel lift.

I get that kind of heel lift thing a lot with my chicken ankles ,the last time I stuck some peel&stick 1/4" spenco cut from a sheet to the tonges of some conform'ables liners the peel & stick seems to stay stuck and it helped a LOT ... what foam did you use ?

edit: I got the sheet of spenco from the local boot fitter and it seemed to be the right consistancey ... not too hard or soft

hey marshal - what a great idea. I've done that before when my old G-fit liners packed out to mush. I used Intuition foam btw. Had some spares from Intuiton

I've had three different heat fittings for mine and still had the most amazing feeling like I was being nailed to the cross instep pressure. Pulling the liner out there are wicked wrinkles in the tongue. Have tried to work them out to no avail at Bent Gate. Talking to Marsh today came home, pulled the liners out of my G-Rides, slip them in and perfect. They fit as they should.

Anybody want to buy some Intuition liners cheap?

    DIRECT HARDPACK COMPARISON:

So I directly compared my Mobes with Power Wraps to my new Nordica 130 flex alpine boots on 4FRNT MSP 181 /w P12s at loveland chair 1 groomers and bumps

    Stiffness:
Nordicas are just slightly stiffer, but not in an important way. In the cold, the Nordicas are almost too stiff for me. Maybe I'll take the cuff plate out.

    Skiing Support:
Mobes are 95-100% of the Alpines!!!

    Differences:
Putting on the Nordicas was like putting a tune on the skis. That is what it comes down to: more precise power transmission to the edges. In anything but hardpack, there is no difference! It was NOT a stiffness problem.

I think the vibram on the Mobes deforms some and steals power transmission from the edges. Maybe I just need to use Dynafits

Who wants some 26.5 Nordica 130 Flex? I think they are Supercharger Blowers...
