I'm so glad I got an AT setup this year....

I'll bet the South will rise up and demand that all the western states have seatbelts on their chairlifts durring holiday weeks/week-ends.

Great, like I really needed to see that. My son (8) was on me last season to let him ride the lift by himself. And umm yeah, Dad you're a puss if you couldn't pull your 8 y/o daughter back up onto the chair.

Why didn't they just keep running the lift? If she was hanging on for 10 minutes, that chair probably would have made it to the top in 10 minutes.

What if the chair bounced a little while running over the sheave wheels?

It probably also would have gone over some spots that were more than 20 ft above the ground.

My kid almost slid off when he was about six, but I grabbed him by the collar as he started to go over the edge.

But last year, at 8, we let him ride alone on lifts that had safety bars.

my little sister got her backpack snagged by the chair and it dragged her around the bullwheel when she was little. The safety was tripped but by that time she was hanging in midair. She was less than a foot off of the ground but the backpack held her up so she was just dangling.

Judging from the picture and video I would say:

    1. His grip on her does not look that good - probably has his hand (in glove) over her jacket not skin to skin which would give him a surer grip. Pulling up too hard would have been a sure recipe for loosing her sooner (prior to them getting the pad in position).

    2. He's got no leverage - look at him he's leaning sideways trying to counter balance her weight. He isn't able to brace his feet on anything for stability or added lifting power from his legs.

Not to be critical of your comment - just giving my take on why he was unable to pull her up. It's pretty much an upright row/dead lift with your back against the wall and your feet dangling. Also the girl was probably wiggling a bit which is going to make her harder to lift.

I worked on a rescue like this once - it was a lot higher and the snow conditions were not good (i.e. compact snow and ice under the chair). I can't tell you how amazed I was at the callous disregard ppl in line had for the child dangling. I witnessed parents in line heckling the child and parent on the chair. Made me sick.

It looks like it was just another kid on the other side and the father kept one hand on the chair for him self. If everyone kicked off the their skis and the father put both arms around the kid I bet he could have lifted him up. Who knows if he would have stayed on the lift though with his center of gravity way out in front of the chair.
