    Messed up hips

I haven't seen a doc about it yet. My local gym has this short track and you run straight for maybe 20 yards, then 90 degree turn and so on. I ran on it for a while and slowly developed hip pain. I've stopped jogging altogether now but the pain is worsening- it's like a burning.

The main thing that seems to irritate it is when my knees are positioned above my hips in a chair. I have to take ibuprofen at night or I'll wake up from the joint pain. The funny thing is I can move around fine, it doesn't hurt when I walk. Anyone have an idea what this is?

I could be wrong, but weren't you going to have some FAI surgery last year?

No, I almost had ACL surgery, but after going to a 3rd doc he said my avulsion fracture healed itself and my knee was okay.

Depending on your age the way to know is exam and xray/mri. If you're sure you don't have cartilage deterioration then it's probably just stiff and bruised. I did PT for sore hip and it sorta helped but what REALLY helped was swimming. Doing breast stroke kick really loosened up the joint. Plus, that track with the sharp turn sounds like source of trouble too. Finally, if you are a snowboarder, the rear hip is vulnerable because it gets twisted and then compressed.

Ice will help and a decent stretch is on one knee push the hip where the knee is on the ground forward.

    Good luck!

I had a friend 45 y/o that required double hip replacement. Just dealt a bad hand when it came to cartilage.

do you have flat feet? hip problems start at the feet and work their way up. Fixing whats causing the problem is critical before fixing the damage its caused.

Do the hips hurt when you walk down stairs? Do you run a lot? Short track turns are bad news on hips and the outside of the knee and can help cause IT (Illiotibial) Band syndrome. The pain is on the outside of the hip, just above where the leg attaches.

Get an Orthopedist to check it out.

    Good luck!

Right now, like I said, the pain gets worse if I'm sitting in a chair and my knees are above my hips. The pain was kind of in remission until I started doing these
lunge exercises, which I've now stopped. The pain is right on the hip joint, on the outside of it. I can rub the part of the joint that hurts.

I can get around fine, there isn't any pain when I walk or jog a few steps.

It's sort of freaking me out because I don't want to have hip surgery.

the burning, and the fact that you mention the outside of the hip, makes me think hip bursitis more than a joint symptom.

Yeah Peter- doing some research, the symptoms of hip bursitis exactly match what I'm feeling. I wonder if I can rid myself of it?

Lunges are like walking down stairs. The IT band is the sheet muscle that runs on the outside of the leg from the knee to the hip. Over use from things like running, especially in sharp corners of a track if you don't alternate direction, and lunges, etc., tighten up the muscle to the point it rubs against the bursa sack on the hip, inflaming it. It can also aggravate the outside of the knee for some people. You can poke the outside of the hip and feel the pain there. Also walking does not cause pain with IT Band. The extra motion and stress of lunging or going downstairs pulls the IT Band tight against the hip and knee joints on the outside, thus the pain of it pulling against inflamed bursa. If you sit on the floor and put on leg out straight and cross the other one over it with the knee bent and the foot planted on the ground up near the knee and pull the knee away from the hip that hurts, you should be able to feel the pain and tightness.

Icing the hip to remove inflammation helps for pain, but then you need to get the IT band stretched out. I have been through numerous bouts of it. Those are just my two cents. IT band is not joint damage. Still it is best to get it checked out.

    Hope that helps.

Did IT band stretches for the first time today. My legs/hips feel really different. When I used to touch the sides of my legs, the tendon was really hardened, now it feels softened up- I think the foam roller did that.

+1, I had the same pain from a major injury when I was 20. I had a boat load of Cortisone injections. My other advice is to stretch your hips everyday. This will make a world of difference. I do my exercises twice a day and my hip pain is nearly gone. Check out Pilates for a low impact workout, best thing I ever did.

Foam rolling and Flexor stretches are the two things that keep me mobile. Lots of rolling right on the tip of the femur, and "dog pee" on the inside of the thigh.

3rd session of foam roller exercises last night and hips are like night and day. I'm thinking I might be able to totally get rid of the pain. Thanks guys.
