    Mavic EX823 vs Stans Flow

The wheelset I thought I was getting fell through so now I am building a set.

These will be on an Enduro. I am pretty light and not to crazy but would like this set to last since the hubs will be a able to convert to about anything that I would ever buy. They will never touch a race bike but will be used for some long climbs so the rotating weight is a consideration i guess. I think your looking at ≈200 grams a rim between the two once setup to tubeless.

Anybody have experience with both? It doesnt look like there are many cons to Flow but the EX823 has to be burlier right? Do you think its worth the weight penalty?

823s are dh rims. 819s are what you should be looking at from mavic.

the ex819 (25-6mm wide) will be at least as strong and stiff as a flow.

flows are 27mm wide xc rims.

ex823 are probably the strongest dh rims on the market.

The 819's are kinda narrow though, aren't they. That was my reasoning anyway, although it may be unwarranted. For some reason I thought they were around 23. I know they are for different purposes, I didn't think either would be out of place on this bike. I could be wrong though.

Also I've been pretty happy with UST rims and tires. Heavy, yes, but I never get flats. Mavic only makes the 2 UST rims right? Basically this is why I am asking.....

You said it right there. 400g is a big difference in a wheelset.

The last two digits in any mavic rim are the internal rim width. 819s are 19mm, 823s are 23 etc.

There's more to a rim than just the width though. 823s are overkill for a trail bike.....which that enduro is.

For what it's worth, I have 819s on my enduro sl.

I was referring to the outer dimensions but yeah the inner one is the important one. What tires you running on your 819's? From the research I have done I was hoping to get something around 21-23mm inner. I dont like how my 2.35 tires which are on my 19mm rim right now are and have been wanting to try a 2.4. I guess they just don't make the rim I want is the problem. If only the 521 was a UST rim. Maybe Im too caught up on UST, its just never failed me.

    823s are 31mm wide. flows are 27mm wide. 819s are 26mm wide. the 521 is 28mm wide.

    2mm is a deal breaker?

and if you are super set on the 521, it is every bit as "tubeless" as a stans rim. just tape it and stick a valve stem in there. no big deal.

I guess the numbers I was getting on rim width were pretty off. 2mm isnt a deal breaker but 4mm is. Thanks for the headsup/lesson guys, I think I am going to re measure the rims I have then rethink this. Inner and outer and different numbers on of them my head is spinning. Im making this harder than I have to as usual.

I wouldn't go with 823s on that bike-nice wheels but a tank at a gun fight. I think the 521, Flows, or 819s would all be good options.

Ok this what go me going with this, after I looked at the 819. I I googled "mavic 819 width" and found This saying they are only 23mm wide. So I then looked to Mavics other UST offering The 823 to find they where 28.8mm according to This Im noticing the weights are off on the 823 compared to mavic web site.

Most of the guys I ride with run 819s on their 6 inch bikes. These are dudes who buy proven solid stuff, willing to pay if it's worth it.

I've had good luck with DT 5.1ds even thought they never seems to make the list. I also don't care about UST.

Awesome you picked up that Enduro! Take the time to polish it up. It's going to be a seriously fun B-Ham bike. What fork / shock are you going to run?

Conundrum hooked up a Lyrik U turn as well. Pretty stoked about the setup, I just need to get the wheel thing figured out.

I've run 819s on my trailbike for the past 5-6 years. The rear is still from the original set, and I swapped out the front a couple of years ago due to a fork change. Someone here bought it, and I'd imagine it's still going strong. I have beat the ever living shit out of that bike along the way and the rims are still like new.

While part of me wishes there were an 821, I've been pretty darn happy with the 819s.
