Wood splitters- how much can you split in a day?

Getting tired of splitting 4 cords by hand every year. If I rent a splitter, how long does it take to process 4 cords? Doing the math whether to buy one or rent every year. Most of my wood is 12-20" rounds, pine & fir.

Back when I lived in Truckee like a real MAN, {Fuck it's cold there!} and cut and hauled all our firewood each season, I would rent a splitter, and with a helper or 2 we could split 4-5 chords in a day. 5-6 hours or so I think. Then I would only need to down size some pieces with a Mall as we used it throughout the winter. Man. I really miss those times...
I hope the new owners haven't fucked up Alpine? What a sweet Mtn. that one!

    Cheers

    Timberwolf - is the best!

Timberwolf. Expensive but worth it. Maybe find one slightly used. Nothing else even comes close. Save your back and buy the one with hydraulic lift. I would guess 5-6 cords per day easy with this unit. May not be econimical for one time year use. I use to sell firewood.

we had one that used an 8 ton jack to work the ram (it looked like a press in a machine shop) and you pumped it by a foot pedal ,it was easyier/fatser than a maul but I got 2/3rds of the way thru last yrs wood pile and I broke it on 18" rounds ...do not buy one

we some kind of motorized unit like the pict above ,I havent used it yet but roomie split all them big chunks in pretty short order

4-5 cords pine and fir = 1-2 days max

when I was selling wood in Truckee 2 guys could cut, split and deliver 3 cords a day easy

now I split most of my softwood by hand, and rent a splitter for 1 day for the hardwood and funky chunks

If I were you, I'd rent - let someone else deal w/ maintaining the fucker - if they'll let you pick it up the night before and return the next afternoon for a 1 day rate you can get ahead of the game and do 4-5 cords easy

I get about 3-4 cords per day of hardwood. Usually I have some big buts and those take longer as they require multiple splits. the good thing about the splitter is you can keep going and going. Much easier over 6 or 8 hours on the body.
