absolutely blasting rain down in the bay...

so, i figured out a great way to make it snow:

move to tahoe, live there for 10 years skiing almost every day, then decide to move to the bay and commute to work by bike right before ski season...

what a season... hope you guys are having fun!
    Still waiting...

Rolling out from the Bay in a hour, Wood webcam looks like nuclear winter, i'm hoping the 88 stays open long enough. I don't want to detour through the sucktacular 50/89.

I wouldn't attempt Spur. At the very least stop in Sutter Creek or Placerville for beta.

Yeah. Go/no go is at Sutter Creek. Will be taking the 88 up to Sutter Creek and check it then. If closed, then it's 49 to 50 to 89.

Chip here at kwood says the road is going to close over the spur and pass. You may need an overnight option in south lake.
6 loaded at 8:58 this morning, and was closed 30 min later along with everything else. Not a wind hold, closed for the day. Got 2 epic laps in 60 mph winds to start the day though!

Any risk for the 50 shutting on me? Am I stupid for attempting to get to sierras tonight?

Bear in mind that Alpine's website reports snow totals at two locations: "lower mountain," which presumably means the snow site above the Roundhouse base (about 6900') and "upper mountain," which probably means the snow stake near the Sisters (call it 8000'). Both locations are reasonably well sheltered, and therefore, less likely to be wind-affected. Squaw does 6200' and 8200', and while I'm not sure of the precise locations, I suspect that 8200' is at the top of the Tram, where there is little if any shelter.

Yes, and maybe. I can tell you that I'm not heading up until early tomorrow morning.

    1. Yes. Avy-risk (or mudslide) is the most common....though I did once have to deal with two startled horses running up and down 50 in the heavy snrain that kinda screwed things up.

    2. Depends on your perspective. Most people I've spoken to believe I am being stupid in attempting to. I believe I'm being intrepid.

There is always a risk of 50 shutting during AC work. Caltrans closed 50 last Sunday night to control both the Twin Bridges slide path and Myers Grade. I saw slides run on Myers Grade from below Echo Summit Lodge and the bowl above the last 90-degree curve by the fire lookout thingy. Typically when 50 closes it's only for 3-4 hours though, sometimes less if nothing moves. Being stuck up top for 4 hours is not as bad as being one of those cars that gets hit on the drive down by a naturally triggered slide.

The other issue will be vis from blowing snow. Just know that as soon as the wind starts blowing drifts out of the trees etc then everyone drives 0-3 mph. One time we had to stop on Luther Pass for 30 minutes because no one could see more than 5-10 feet in front of them. If you can time it so you're not coming up or down the pass during a huge wave then you should go for it tonight.

edit: I'm looking at the forecast ... mmm maybe tomorrow morning is smarter. Are you driving solo? do you have a shovel, flares, extra sleeping bag, extra food in your car? Fog lights? Snow tires? It's going to be a sketchy drive ...

My plan is to leave SF tomorrow after breakfast and head straight to south lake to grab some gear. Booked lodging at kw for fri-sat night for logical logistical reasons.

Based on the hurricane happening in my back yard, and the storm waves moving east at about as fast as I can drive, I would suggest the morning. But. If you get up there tonight, you'll be stoked.
