Reminded me of the Cloverfield Paradox. Complete, meandering mess. I'll never get those 2 hours back. On the other hand, Annihilation with Natalie Portman is a much better story of an Environmental Holocaust

Dark Tourist. Takes me places I don't always want to go, but so far hasn't crossed my line.

I have a million thoughts after watching 2 episodes, but one main question would be for the Bachelorette parties going on Jeffery Dahmer tours: what would the sex be like if you picked one of those girls up afterwards????

I only made it to 20 minutes - WTF M. Pena?!?!? You're better than that.

I'm starting to think Netflix has no real standards for "movies".

I have watched a number of Netflix Originals movies lately and the bulk of them were mediocre at best, but more often than not were complete shit.

I am curious as to what percentage of the Netflix Originals were actually produced by NF, as in they originated the idea, put the creative teams together, and oversaw the production from start to finish.

My guess is that the bulk of their "original" movies were made by somebody else who was ultimately unable to get distribution through the major studios (or all the major studios passed because the film(s) were shit) and then NF came along and scooped them up for cheap. The original producers get their money, NF gets a film that looks good on paper, so to speak (i.e. a film which they can sell to viewers with a snappy synopsis and a cool graphic). Also, I've noticed that quite a large number of the Netflix Original movies are genre films and genre junkies are starved for new material, so they are willing to give anything a shot. I've gotta guess that NF is well aware of this.

In many ways NF is the new direct-to-video, if you are old enough to remember all those great looking (based on cool box art and snappy descriptions) cheap action/horror/sci-fi films that took up the majority of shelf space at the video store back in the '80s!

Extinction is garbage. Any flick that involves little kids cheating death left and right I have no interest in. The high tech robot alien killing machines can't detect a human behind drywall. Give me a break.

How far did you get into the movie?
Not that it's worth finishing... good movie for a nap.

This looks cool, despite some of the formulaic nuances that bring to mind Inception, The Thirteenth Floor, and The Fountain...

It's available on Netflix DVD. Movie is okay, a bit weird. I did not learn any new insights into Miles, i.e., I already knew he was a quirky strung out asshole. If you are interested in movies re modern jazz greats, IMO Chasing Trane, I Called Him Morgan and Born to Be Blue (re John Coltrane, Lee Morgan and Chet Baker, respectively) are considerably better movies. All 3 are available via Netflix streaming.

Gotta disagree with dentist collective here, Extinction is awsome, assuming you watch the entire movie. The twist is great, there are clues dropped throughout the movie.

Most netflix produced scifi is weak, more like drama with with a scifi coating. But Extinction is solid. It helps to have kids similar aged to the ones in the movie.

You are right on the poop-scoop method, but there also NF movies that are financed by NF before they start shooting. And NF has much higher production standards than years ago, funny I know, but scripts are still bad.

I think all 'NF originals' are financed by NF early on, and the rest are pooped-then-scooped with some really good movies interspersed.

I dont really watch movies - not a fan tbh, prefer a solid tv series, just like I generally prefer a novel over a short story. Thankfully there are enough solid NF original TV series, be it bought to play exclusively on NF - or atleast in America for some - or actual NF products. The dawn of a new age of tv shows started a handful of years ago, and now we have started to hit the golden age. Movies seem to be in decline, and I dont really see a new age of movies anytime soon.

Meh. I thought the first half was great, but the twist was not that good IMO. I kinda lost interest towards the end.

    American Honey.

It's like a companion piece to Kids. Hard to watch sometimes, but charming with a "Pig-Pen" aesthetic, crushingly forlorn and slightly dangerous, wanting to watch more but not sure if you will like what you see. A subdued hopeful, summer-y feel as an undercurrent of la la la la la la fingers-in-ears we're-not-listening that provides reprieve, counterpoint, denial, and way for the characters to deal with, and paste over, the hard-to-watch parts of young and truely troubled lives. Lives that reflect the worst and best of both human resilience and the mythology of American exceptionalism.

Unreal soundtrack. Really, really good. Just spectacularly fits the film.

The movie is slightly too long and repetitive without seeming to get ahead or make progress, but that's partly the point.

Shia LaBeouf is utterly beguiling. So much so that you forget, or can't believe, it's Shia LaBeouf, which is perhaps his best acting trick yet. The second time you watch it, see it from his perspective.

Sasha Lane is perfect in her role, significantly as it's her first. Simultaneously soft and hard, hot and cold, in the same way Chloe Grace Moretz can be when she's at her best. Her's are the eyes through which we see into this world, and perhaps back also to when we were, or could be, youthfully and simultaneously soft and hard, and hot and cold, and experienced and innocent and curious. The first time you watch it, see it from her perspective.

Stirs all the relatable themes, times, and demons present during my youth, just as Kids did for me.

Pertinent to American Honey, here's a good article by the New York Times about the realities of magazine crews.

Haven't watched it yet, but Fauda sounds pretty interesting: https://www.netflix.com/title/80113612

    Wow.
That ending was so abrupt and chopped up, I had to freeze frame the screen to figure out wtf. It was like a complete after thought. Waiting until the last 30sec of 8hr series to drop the big reveal and then split second flashes of explanation in the credits. So poorly done and aggravating.
