Wife and I finally got around to watching Beef and we both enjoyed it. Great mix of comedy, drama and action. Steven Yeun and Ali Wong were both great.

My wife said "This is like Shameless, but with rich people" and I kinda agree. Maybe Netflix will revive it. Funny show, haven't laughed that hard at the tv in a while.

I’ve been enjoying FUBAR. It’s ridiculous and formulaic as hell, and feels a little dated, but I think that’s what I like about it. Adding Arnold to that familiar stew makes for a nostalgia bomb that speaks to me more than I care to admit. I also think Fortune Feimster is hilarious. Like a lot of the cast, her acting is shaky at first, but seems to improve as the series progresses. That or maybe I’m just getting used to it.

My sanity check is that my teenager has been watching with me and likes it and how ridiculous it is.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

Time Out is gushing about Extraction 2

I was not a fan of 2020’s Extraction.
I felt it was an incredibly generic, paint-by-numbers affair.

Naturally, NF went and spent millions of dollars on a sequel.

I’mma prolly take a hard pass, but I know quite a lot of youse really dig the bloated NF action fare.

And NF drops another $100+ million dollars in their continuing (and thus far unsuccessful) attempt to create an ongoing franchise in the James Bond/M:I/Fast & Furious mold…

Wasn't wowed by Extraction 1, so went in with low expectations: they were exceeded. Non-stop violence with a garnish of humanity. No regrets.

Just saw S06E01 of Black Mirror last night. "Joan is Awful." Salma Hayek was awesome in there. Dayum she's still got it. Annie Murphy was great too. Haven't seen the rest of the season yet and I'm hearing mixed things about it, but this one was good at least. Amazing that Netflix basically just let Charlie Brooker take a massive dump on their service. OHHHH HOOOOOOO!!!!! I JUST GOT IT! (about a scene in the show that is) No spoilers. Just go watch it.

I’ve loved the potential truth of Black Mirror. Season 6 seems have have moved in a different direction with the Red Mirror concept. While only Demon 79 is labeled as a RM, I think Loch Henry and Mazey Day fall into that category. Joan is Awful and Beyond the Sea stay more within the original realm.

As mindless summer fluff shows go, The Night Agent is decent so far.

Suits. I guess I like witty lawyers because I only have one episode left to watch. I’ve certainly enjoyed it.

With the glaringly obvious exception of Meghan, all the characters were played superbly.

Dammit, Netflix! Why you keep putting up old franchises for like 2 seconds before yanking them again?!!!

So, much like they briefly gave us the Conan (also being pulled end of this month), they finally brought us the Riddick trilogy. I actually own them on DVD, but they look bad on modern TVs so been wanting to revisit them again in HD. Watched Pitch Black last weekend. A worthy kinda low budget film that introduced us all to the main character, as famously played by Vin Diesel. Fun movie. Absolutely worth a re-watch. Can't believe it came out like 23 years ago!!!

Before moving on to 2004's Chronicles of Riddick, I prepped by watching Dark Fury. The 1/2 hour long short animated film done by Peter Chung, more well known for his badass Aeon Flux series, as well as Rugrats if you can believe it! I always liked Dark Fury, but glad I watched it again before diving in to the next entry, as it beautifully bridges the gap between the two films, serving to (A) explain a ton, introduce a certain Merc (Toombs), set things up for the sequel, and (B) make the transition between the first 2 films' VERY different styles/themes/production/story far less jarring. That being the director's goal of course by doing the animated film. Pretty badass little romp, so check it out any way you can, and really illustrates how Riddick can be so cartoonily capable and over-powered in all the other films, some of which the next one explains as well, him being a Furyan and all that.

Watched Chronicles of Riddick last night, and I gotta say... I enjoyed it a LOT more this time than I did when I first watched in theaters nearly 2 decades ago. I think what both critics, audiences, and I all weren't too stoked on was that we were expecting Pitch Black, and we ended up with something VERY different. Much more blockbustery, action, space opera. Again, this is where watching Dark Fury helped aid my appreciation of it. That, and of course just kind of "going with it" more than I did last time. They spared no expense apparently with set design and a lot of excellent practical effects. Sure, there's plenty of CG, but you can tell they held back a bit compared to other dated films of the era that have aged far less gracefully. Was fun seeing Thandiwe Newton in there (who I LOVED in RocknRolla) and some other notable performances like Judi Dench. Anyway, it's a good time overall.

Now to wrap it all up with 2013's Riddick. I'm going to go into this one with lower expectations, since it got something like 1/3 the budget of it's predecessor. Guess I'll find out. Anyway, go check out the franchise before it leaves Netflix (AGAIN!) on July 15th.

Definitely need to watch Dark Fury - thanks!

I've really enjoyed all three movies, although II teetered on the edge of overly melodramatic. III was tops for snarky badd assery.

I’ve got one to recommend/not watching. My wife has had a stranglehold on Netflix the past few weeks as we binged “Manifest”.

This ridiculous show and it’s characters is annoyingly awful…lol. We are almost done/ and I cannot wait….I just hope this last episode is the absolute series finale/

Just wrapped up my Chronicles marathon last night with 2013's Riddick. Probably thanks to going into it with low expectations to begin, I had a good time. Apparently I must have never gotten around to this one back then because I do not remember watching it whatsoever. That said, I believe it's safe to say it was the weakest of the series IMO. Too much dated CG, bad green screening, etc., and some of it was a bit of a slog to get through, BUT the last 30 minutes or so made up for it when all of a sudden everything gets cranked up. Was fun seeing Katee Sackhoff (from the Mandalorian and a few other things) and Dave Bautista in there too.

What I do find interesting is all the Chronicles of Riddick films being directed by one David Twohy, yet each entry very much have their own distinct ways about them. They are all SO different from one another. Know that going in, and you might appreciate each one more for what they are. Just treat them as connected but individual movies. I will say though, Riddick felt like a bit more of a B-movie than the others, albeit somewhat entertaining. Much like Conan the Destroyer vs Conan the Barbarian, they ramped up the campiness and cheese factor. Some things land but others are just groan-inducing. I can see why the franchise ended with Riddick. Hollywood was probably like, yeah, we're done here. Haha. Probably a good call without giving them the significantly larger budget of the 2nd one. Anyway, that's my take. Definitely watch Pitch Black, Dark Fury, and the Chronicles of Riddick, but you can skip Riddick if you run out of time or just don't care. This one you can take it or leave it. But still. I'm glad I wrapped it all up. Was fun.

Word on the street ( at least according to Wikipedia and IMDb) is that there is a fourth entry in the works tentatively titled Riddick: Furya.

As for Twohy, imho he’s made some stellar B-movies, specifically The Arrival and A Perfect Getaway, in addition to Pitch Black.

Alas, I was not as enamored by the Riddick sequels as all y’all and felt the were unnecessary. But to each their own.

Oohhhhh yeah! I loved the Arrival back in the 90s!!! Twohy was also who wrote The Fugitive, another 90s classic.

I totally understand your take, as I wasn't thrilled about Chronicles of Riddick when it came out either, but upon revisiting it, I enjoyed it more than I previously had. I wouldn't go so far as to say I'm enamored by the sequels, but more that I had a good time with them, about like I did with the cheesy Conan sequel. Worth popping some corn at home, pouring a couple (strong) beverages to get through them, and the Netflix "price of admission." While I'd call Pitch Black MANDATORY viewing for Sci-Fi fans, all of the sequels are purely optional IMO. I don't know if you remember this, but one thing that did a great job diving more into the Riddick universe was the OG XBox game, "The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay," ALSO released in 2004. Damn, Universal Studios was seriously going all in on the franchise in 2004, huh? Anyway, it's actually a surprisingly FANTASTIC game with amazing graphics for the time and a super good soundtrack. Vin Diesel was pretty involved in the game's development. It's essentially the prequel to Pitch Black. Look into it if you've never played it. Not saying you have to track down some random 20 year old game, but it's worth at least spending a few minutes briefly watching video reviews or summaries of the story. It is considered canon I believe.

Thought this was a good take on the whole subject. Pretty much explains the disjointedness of them all. Funny he refers to the character of Riddick as a "Space Conan." Nailed it. LMAO:
