TR: Normal weirdness on Pelton Peak, North Cascades, WA.

Jason, Adam and I skied Pelton Peak in the Cascade Pass area of North Cascades Nat'l Park on Saturday. We encountered typical unconsolidated spring snow, plus the nice bonus of 4'' wind slabs near the top of our sub-8k' peak. On this same day there was a large avalanche involving several climbers on Mt. Rainier. Spring time in WA is dangerous! Hopefully now that its June it will quit being winter and things will consolidate, but its still not quite there.

J'Berg in the morning. Who needs coffee? Well I do actually, I brewed up at the car.

Magic Peak as seen from Cascade Pass.

    The crew. Good dudes.

Skinning up to the Yawning Glacier (I think), Sahale Mountain behind (I'm sure).

We were gonna ski a couloir on Magic. But then it started avalanching wet debris over 200' cliffs. So we went over to Pelton instead where things were still a bit dicey. Jason wishing he had followed my lead and put on his crampons.

Nearing the top with Cascade Pass in the background.

    Closer still with Magic behind.

    Summit, summit, summit!

Trapper Peak and Lake off the back.

    Shred-thirty.

A few of these little pockets popped out. They were small and predictable, but taking a tumble would have been a long painful bummer.

    Oooh, pretty rock.

    Grip it and rip it.

Skinning back to Cascade Pass for a glorious 3,000' corn run back to the road.

Looking back at Pelton. We skied off the summit and down the couloir to the right.

    Next!

Well done! I've been up there a lot in the summer, but have yet to make it to ski...I must do so soon. How much longer do you think the snow will be holding up there?
    When in doubt...straighten 'em out.

Yeah, how long do spring skiing conditions last around there? That looks sick! Thanks for sharing

Sick. Couldn't stop staring at Magic the last time I was out there. Cascade pass has some fun lines in and around.

Snow pack up there looks better than last year's. And a nice consolation prize for missing the line on Magic!
