"Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically"

What a way to start the work day!

Computer is Dell Latitude D630. Has always run fine (well, after the first messed-up computer was exchanged). Originally came with Vista, then installed Windows 7 whenever it was that it first came out. Nothing of note recently has been going on with the computer (no error messages, new hardware, etc.) . . . well, until this morning.

Below are some of the specific items that came up during the startup repair attempt. After despairing about this, I restarted the computer and . . . everything seems fine?

So should I . . . just carry on as usual? Run some more tests? Consider this computer unreliable and buy a new one?

Could be the start of a failed hard drive. Your boot section and startup are corrupted. Could be a virus also if you in fact were not adding any new hardware or otherwise making changes.

There are a few threads discussing what you can attempt to try to get it back to booting:

    http://social.answers.microsoft.com/...5-62cb90dbf3b4

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...a-d868075d763e

are 2 that discuss this and offer suggestions for attempting to fix (note they did not help in all cases).

I'd also do a basic hard drive test and diagnostics to see if it passes - could be damaged hard drive too. Some Dell's have their own hardware diagnostics, otherwise use the drive manufacturer's recommended- Seagate Seatools or Hitachi Drive Fitness Test.

immediately back up everything important on to usb flash drives.

    Dell blows monkey chunks.

    go here: http://download.cnet.com/windows/
    and download ccleaner: http://download.cnet.com/ccleaner/?tag=mncol

run all the scans, and keep saving your important files on flash drives.

Had a very very similar issue with my Dell Studio 1535 laptop. Was able to go F8 at the start and go back to the configuration or setup or whatever from two weeks before, and it fired up and is doing ok. But thanks to RShea and our tech guy's assistance, have diagnosed a hard drive trying to shit the bed using the seagate tools. Going to be going from 250G to 360 or 640G for like $120 new with a five year warranty. I don't care if Dell blows, it's what i have, and all i'm gonna have for a while.

And I never hear a single word you say when you tell me not to have my fun
It's the same old shit that I ain't gonna take off anyone.
and I never had a shortage of people tryin' to warn me about the dangers I pose to myself.

First of all, thanks for everyone's feedback so far.

Second, my actions have been to: ensure that my Mozy backup is current, buy a 16 gig flash drive as backup to backup, and then today run many hrs of tests (accessed via the diagnostics option from F12 during the Dell splash screen).

Third, well, this is all kind of confusing. The only error messages were:
    *****
    Error Code 2000-0326
LCD inverter error, unable to turn lamp ON. Vendor:
    MPS Revision: 3
    *****
    Error Code 5300:0D25
Msg: Video Unable to detect inverter lamp status
    *****
Sounds like this is the same underlying problem, just reported slightly differently by different tests.
But everything seems to be okay. Although I've been running the laptop lately off an external monitor (via a docking station), when I undocked the laptop and used its own screen, everything was fine.

So, hope everything stays okay, or . . . ?
(I still have over four months on the Dell warranty.)

If you had it docked and on an external monitor then the internal LCD was probably turned off (especially if the lid is closed too.) So those errors are not an issue if they go away when run undocked.

If the hard drive passes- then it is file system corruption or Windows start-up. Next step is to try a repair or worst case since you have the important data backed up online and with the thumb drive do a system restore with the Dell provided DVD/CD's since it sounds like it is not a failing hard drive if the Dell diagnostics passes the drive tests.
