Terrible situation to be in. Best of luck with your FULL recovery.
wow, just read Lou's test. Looks like a serious flaw that is pretty easy to replicate. Will be very interesting to see how Salomon responds...

Best of luck to you TC. Sounds like you've got a pretty good attitude about recovery though.

    ++++++positive thoughts for sure++++++++

After reading Lou's analysis I can only conclude that Salomon did some sloppy engineering with little to no analysis or proper testing. Honestly, what were they thinking??? Reducing the burlyness of the insterts, reducing the support for the interface, then marketing the boot as the burlyest huckingest boot on the market when it isn't even suitable for randoracers. Follow that up with inaction on their dangerous design and I've got to call foul!

    Good questions.

It seems that VERY minimal testing would have exposed those flaws, no? I mean, all Lou did was lever on it with a small pry bar and compare it to a pair of Scarpas. Not highly advanced materials-engineering...

    Vibes to TC.

I'm no metallurgist, but that's absolute bullshit they would even consider using metal that flimsy.

can we get a mod to put this on ski/board as a sticky?? i'll post a thread with a link, or maybe you want to do that D? definitely needs to get out there, considering the complete lack of a response whatsoever by salomon.

Search "Salomon Quest Ski boot" in google or bing shopping. See if the boot or Tech sole is for sale. Emails and/or calls should be sent by all of us to retailers with an online presence alerting them to this issue with a link to the wildsnow article. Don't threaten but suggest you want to do business with retailers who care about their customers safety and sales of this unsafe product should stop now. Take 20 minutes tonight and go from piss and moan, to action. Tomorrow, call your local shop. Someone will be saved.

Has anyone actually reported this to the CPSC (federal agency that works with manufacturers to recall unsafe products)?

After seeing Lou's test, I can't believe this thing went to market. And to think I was going to trust my life with these fittings too. This is frightening and outrageous. What engineer thought this was going to be trustworthy for exposed ski mountaineering? How could this have been overlooked by Salomon? How could this even have been tested? Not for nothing, but they certainly could have compared it to the other inserts at least like Lou did in probly 20 minutes. Really scary. I guess these manufacturers just expect us to be their guinea pigs now. Shameful this was overlooked as I have otherwise used and trusted Salomon products over the years. I hope they make this as right as they can make it and that you make a full (and fully compensated) recovery.

    that's simply unacceptable.

TC - my injury was of a different nature but had similiar potential implications (compression fracture of the L1 vertebra).
i know that you have already recovered from a nasty injury that occured (last season?) so you know the mental drill (don't worry, you'll get that tech fitting removed).

get an incredible personal injury lawyer (hopefully pro bono) and ass-ream the fuck out of salomon.

stay strong and heal quickly (take it one breath at a time)

I have a feeling they're gonna make it right, hopefully it doesn't get too ugly. Seems pretty cut and dry to me. Hopefully it will be a learning experience for them and all manufacturers of touring and mountaineering related equipment. If yer life depends on it, make it right the first time. Don't fuck around and skimp on life and limb dependent interfaces. Thank you very much.

Incidentally, the expectation that Salomon would respond quickly and publicly with an unqualified mea culpa is not realistic, no attorney for them would recommend that.

That said, I certainly hope that they will at least quietly address the issue properly. This is a terrible outcome for what looks to be a very preventable problem.
