I don't know Jack about that machine or any of those others. You watch too much TV.I bought a $4 rubber ball to do 1 legged squats on, a rope tied between 2 trees and run down a dry creek bed during the summer.

build a box--mine's 15 inches high, you could go higher, and jump up and down on and off it as fast as you can. apparently it's the landing jumping down, not the jumping up, that gets the ultra fast twitch fibers. alternate with side to side jumps over an obstacle. I manage 6 sets of 20 reps each, but I'm old. These exercises reproduce skiing in a couple ways, the main one being you can get hurt.
Hmmm... I'm sort-of bummed to discover that it's not a better-for-skiing version of a stairmaster. I was hoping to find something that could crank out 1100 or 1200 calories an hour with some sort of type IIa fiber exertion, but was more fun than stairmaster. Could one reliably get the level of intensity up that high? Is there significant resistance?
And what I'd really like to know is: does it strengthen your lower legs?
To this day, I haven't found ANYTHING other than skiing that works my intrinsic foot muscles, tib anterior, fibularis, and other dorsiflexor/plantar flexor/inverter/everters like skiing in a stiff boot. The issue is that I get a lot of foot fatigue in a tight boot when I'm not used to it (which is pretty much every time I go skiing, as I'm usually coming off a 4- or 5-week hiatus, at the least).
Can anyone speak for the lower legs and skier's edge, and perhaps on the degree of resistance? Well recommended for a more fun aerobic component of a ski workout, maybe?
Oh, and nice post, Pancakes. Probably the most insightful I've ever seen!

Yeah those machines suck ,that's why all the ski teams use them.

cross country running with the dog as motivation. Try running down hills backwards(on the road), its easier on your knees too. try a 3 mile road run thru the hills and see how your lower legs feel. Just experiment with it, it works for me.
We, the RATBAGGERS, formally axcept our duty is to trigger avalaches on all skiers ...
I don't know, or care, if this workout is any good for skiing. It's god for somethin' else...

Can you have sex on it? If no don't buy it.
But heres the deal. Do you live near any hills or montains?
Take a walk every day up a hill and down a hill.
Then when that gets easy Run up the hill and down the hill.
You get Leg strength, Cardi, lungs, and you get out in the fresh air. all good things.
So unless you are training for the Olympics ? That will get it done. Fuck the excercise equipment
And oh yea Roller blades. I have 2 pair but I don't use them anymore cuz they scare me
Yo you guys been leg busters with or w/o weights?
Your bodyweight is plenty. If that gets too easy just do them faster.
As far as Deep Days is concerned, mtnathlete.com (inventor of leg blasters as seen above) has his people do lots of box step ups, sandbag get ups, and isometric holds with weighted backpacks and ski boots before ski season starts. I suspect this would work great for your goals.
Using a Skier's Edge is like riding a Vespa or sleeping with Condelezza Rice - as long as your friends don't know about it, you're fine.

I have always thought they looked pretty cool......but once priced them and they were rediculus. A Craigslist find could make it worth it.
Pancakes....wow way too harsh.
StraightChuter.....funny! But I think riding a Vespa would be alot more fun than riding Condy. So not really same ballpark.

Wall sits for as long as you can go, split lunges with weights, mountain climbers, leg drops, cherry pickers, v-sits, crunches, side crunches, jumpees, scullers, planks, and, most importantly, bench jumps over and over again.
Doing that a few times a week with rest days in between along with cardio will make your legs and core totally ready for skiing, plus the biggest benefit is that you're not "that faggot" who uses a skier's edge
Hmm, but if I was riding Condi while riding a Vespa, friends would surely have to know about it.
Can you get a great work out in without a skier's edge that will help your ski conditioning? Yup. Just like you can run without a treadmill, bike without a stationary, run stairs without a stairmaster. Do they work as advertised? I haven't used one myself but know a ski coach who liked his a lot, Ted Ligety endorses them as well and his conditioning doesn't appear to be suffering. I'd get one for my kids to play on if I could find one on the cheap.
If memory serves there was a board member here that was a rep for them a few years ago.
Move upside and let the man go through...
You should take the money you'd spend on that crap and buy a good mountain bike. You really think a fairly static activity like pedaling a stationary bike in a gym is going to prepare you for a dynamic activity like skiing? Even that skiers edge thing really isn't very dynamic, its like skiing on the bunny hill I think. You need to get off balance to work your core muscles, and you need to sprint at intervals, something which can be very hard to make yourself do if you're not on a trail that requires it.
Or you can just do this, im not into mogul skiing, but this shit would be great for any kind of power and agility conditioning.

Combine that with mnt biking, climbing some peaks with a pack on, and maybe a little yoga and you'll be in great shape for skiing.

Bought one cheap off the intrawebz. Good when used as a part of a total workout regime. I do what I call wind sprinting on them. Really hard charging for 5 minutes at a time (with the bands as stiff as possible) coupled with leg blasts, leg lifts that sort of stuff.
What they do very well is teach muscle memory and help improve technique. I found I rolled my ankles got better edging technique through turns and had less upper body movement after using mine for a season.
