They should bomb that face all year if they are going to do the comp on the Tram Face. Not really sure what houses are in danger? The ones on Granite Peak way I suppose, but those are all built to withstand avalanches, I've been told. Just let the homeowners know when they are going to do it so they can leave, then help them dig out.
There is also a huge wind pocket/rollover right where the avy started. Remember last year when the whole face slide naturally from there all the way down the ridge like 8' deep?? I mean the wind just builds the snow up there huge, we get 6" and that whole pocket would be 6' deep at least. Also, did you ready the avy forcast, it talked about large slabs stepping down to the Feb 20 storm. I want to see this go down as much as anyone, but I want safety to be #1 priority, so they should bomb it!

What was funny was to see a few people hide in a hole.... WTF really? A hole? Good idea.

After that the word came down to get the hell out of there
Hide in a hole. That made me LOL.

Here is a pic of a crown that supposedly a photographer remotely triggered from the ridge.

The slide path that sent up a 50 foot high cloud and had a couple people hide in a hole to avoid being buried.

why would they? the conditions for holding the contest there aren't likely to be better than today in the future, and they couldn't do it today.

but there'll be skiing on an excellent venue next weekend anyway.

gotta agree. shitty that the resort couldnt figure out how to make this happen. whether they let patrol bomb it, or create a better game plan, you'd think that with the best terrain in the basin they could have figured it out. i would have been totally satisfied watching the "freeride world tour" in silverado, kt, wherever. but you sold me a fucking filet mignon, dont try to serve me a cheeseburger! probably move to JH next year. anybody remember crested butte and the x-games, then they moved.......can you say guinea pig?

I too would be suprised if the FWT returns to Squaw next year. It's a shame, because we have such a great venue with unrivaled spectator access. They are now 0 for 3 with the event in the US, the first year in Mammoth and now two years at Squaw. If they swapped dates with Russia and held the event the last week in January they would have a much better shot at pulling it off.

If they could convince Kirkwood to break their ties with the IFSA, the Cirque would be a great venue as well. Moving to Jackson I think would require a heli access venue, all but eliminating spectator viewing. The North Shore comes to mind, but I am not very familiar with what other options would exist there.

Hopefully they will get two solid runs tomorrow and not give up on the possibility of running the men on Tram Face Thursday morning.

I'm hearing first run at 8am tomorrow which means the public will miss the first run unless you skin up Shirley Canyon, which I think I might do, so I can watch a few runs before heading to work.

My point exactly. I think EVERYONE would be stoked on this event if they simply didnt sell it as the Tram Face. Where do you go from there if you cant produce? World Tour at Squaw is clout enough! Ive skied a lot of places and I gotta say that Silverado is some of the burliest and hectic Lift Accessible (no hiking, no traversing) terrain Ive seen. Its an incredible venue! However, its like an after thought now in the shadow of the tram face. Sucks....

Was the organization in charge of their own avi control? will that be the case again today at Silverado? Has Squaw just turned over the venue sites to the organization to safety check, cut, and prepare?

It just seems strange that a group of knowlegable people thought that slope was good to go. Were they so determined to ski the untracked fresh snow that they were unwilling to intentionally set it off, or check the stability with some solid ski cuts?

I think posts pointing a Squaw are missing the point. check into the Tour's own actions, responsibility, and people. there's the problem, IMO.

I completely understand not holding the event yesterday. The snow is sketchy right now. Anyone who's skied the last 3 days knows that.

Last year was an even bigger blunder in my opinion. They held the siverado day at the beginning of the window......and then left town when it snowed.....still within the window. Don't forget this was the week that two parties pulled a dawn poach last year too. They blew it last year but at least they're keeping it open and seeing what conditions do. Just keep your fingers crossed.

that's what really pissed me off last year.... they talk about this "window" then everybody leaves with a sweet storm on the way and 5 days left in the window because they have somewhere else to be.

if everybody plans on leaving after a few days, don't say there's a one week window. if i recall correctly the skiing was DAMN good at the end of last year's "window."

that being said, i hope everything goes well in silvy today. hopefully the competitors got a chance to inspect the venue yesterday so that there's some actual variety in line selection this year. for those who get to watch, enjoy...

    please post pics, vids, links...

MSI's truck says FWT in turquoise denoting the Freeskiing World Tour (IFSA). May have been that one?

    Killer 1st run.

Candide might have broken something on his right knee Doc was sending him in for an xray on the snowmobile although he was insisting on skiing down.
