    I agree with Basinbeater, Wirehair pointer might just be what you are looking for. Friendly, tough but will be very protective, too. Don't get cold easy and will run all day. They do need a lot of exercise but I don't think that will be a problem with you.

    130lb Great Dane protecting, her way. This dog will bark so loud it hurts your ears when strangers are close.
