while it has been a good winter, the nws has seriously exaggerated every single storm this year.

    Baldy ski area
    Saturday April 24th

I was thinking it was the last weekend they would run the lifts, but it sounds like they are going to keep them going until at least May 2nd. Plenty of snow and good conditions, but I'm guessing they are not making much money, hopefully enough to keep them running a few more weekends.

    Nice smooth corn:

Seemed a bit warm for the fart bag, but what do I know...:

Marla wants to get into jumping on the tele skis and thinks she is ready for the rock in south bowl after this:

Glad we are not driving north:

Skied ~1030 to 1615. Someone said it was icy in the morning, but seemed great on our first run.

I want to emphasize how good the snow was on Baden Powell was this weekend, and how easy the access was. Normally I wouldn't do this, but considering we only saw 1 or 2 random tracks the entire day, I'm not too concerned that I'm giving away a secret. It won't last long, so go get some.

Also, while hiking back to the parking lot, expect random dads who are hiking around with their kids while drinking beer to say to you, "Looks like a lot of work," when it is very clear he is thinking, "dumb asses."

is it worth heading up to baldy tomorrow?

i haven't had a chance to get up there in a few weeks, is there enough snow to have a little fun for a few hours?

A few photos from the ski area on Sunday May 2nd. I was on my alpine gear. Little windy in the morning, but the snow was nice all day. Snow is melting very fast. Best run was in South Bowl, but had to hike part of the traverse. Should still be fun this weekend, but I think Sunday was my last day at the ski area.

True, thanks for the info. The caltrans webpage still said closed this morning so I brought the bike, but also brought stuff to lock it in the back of my truck.

Skied Mount Burnham and Throop Peak today. Talk about easy access, put my crampons on while sitting on the tailgate of my truck and stepped right onto the snow. Didn't see any other skiers. Throop was great, but snow not so good on Burnham. Mount Hawkins looked really good from afar.
Go get it soon people, because it is melting fast...very warm out today. No excuses now that I put in a nice boot pack

    Saturday May 8th
Mt Burnham and Throop Peak from ACH

The highway was open, so didn't need to bike from Vincent gap. Didn't see any other skiers. Most of the traffic on the ACH was motorcycles, but the noise from the Caltrans rock plow truck scared me several times while booting up...sounded like the mountain was falling down. Locked the bike in the back of the truck:

Talk about easy access. I put the crampons on while on the tailgate of my truck and stepped right onto the snow and started up the chute:

Booting up Mt Burnham sucked and took me 2 hours, twice as long as I was planning based on my normal hiking speed. Snow was very soft in spots and lots of post holing. View from the summit:

Ski down was ok. Had some good turns and some survival turns. If the snow was better, potential for a good run is high. Looking down near the dogleg:

Looking back up at my tracks:

Took off the ski boots to drive up the road another mile to the base of Throop. Hiking up was much better and made good time to the summit. View from part way up:

    A UFO mocks me:

    View from the summit:

Throop is steeper than Burnham and the chute faces NW, so the snow was much better and the ski down was great. In hindsight, I should have made 2 laps on Throop. But I guess it was good to check out Burnham. Tailgate shot, ski right to the road:

Mount Hawkins looked really good from afar:

Throop route in red, potential for several other interesting lines:

    Same for Burnham:

Think this was my last SoCal ski trip. Epic season!

Looking good. My excuse is a still a bad knee (I am going to see how it does at the mini.)

Here's an idea for next week, get up there early, ski a couple chutes and then watch Lance and the boys cycle past. Should be the best stage to date.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

Will there be enough coverage tomorrow to avoid rock encounters of the worst kind? It has to be melting away quick now.
