    PSIA Alpine Technical Manual Hilarity

"Figure 5.2 Here is a path-to-parallel option for an athletic 16-year-old male who is an inline skater and surfer and wants to try ski boards for the first time."

It then goes through a sample progression. What really should be done in this student's case?

How can you tell if there's a ski instructor at the party you're attending?

I'm PSIA certified Level 1.5 and have been teaching for 3 seasons in Tahoe now. Not quite sure what is so hilarious about the OP's thread since knowing if a person has participated in like-minded sports can be extremely beneficial to teaching them (i.e. somebody who is athletic versus somebody who is overweight; somebody who has participated in inline skating or ice skating (they will have great balance and more than likely already know how to edge) versus somebody who has not; somebody who surfs (again they will have great balance) versus somebody who does not.

I've taught a number of kids who had never been on snow before, but had been long time hockey players. They picked up skiing quickly, especially skating. The fact that they had great balance and already knew how to skate made the transition into skiing and picking up parallel turns super easy. I've taught a few adults who skateboarded, but again had never been on skis. The fact that they had good balance, knew the basic body mechanics of turning and had upper and lower body separation due to their skateboarding made the transition to skiing super easy.

I believe in the same manual they give a scenario where the person you are instructing is a 6 foot tall basketball player. The reason for these scenarios is that knowing a person's athletic background can help you help them choose the proper equipment (short versus long skis, stiff versus soft skis, etc) and also help you tailor your teaching methods to them (i.e. finding a correlation between basketball, skating, surfing or whatever other sport and skiing). The result is that is can and should aid in the teaching and make the process easier for both student and instructor.

    But I digress...

    LOLZ

Dook, I think the funneez may stem from the implied "gayness" of rollerblades and snowlerblades referenced in the manual.

I always chuckle when I see this picture of a member of PSIA's original Board of Directors.

In any case, if you're ever really in this situation make sure you at least bargain in a couple of fluffers.

Okay I can see the Rollerblade angle...perhaps PSIA needs to update and change it to hockey player/ice skater...

And perhaps I should validate my "overweight" comment...I actually know a number of decidedly overweight skiers who are really good, they just might not have the stamina of a slightly more svelte individual and most assuredly are not hiking for turns on their days off. More to the point, somebody who is severely overweight and doesn't live at altitude may have problems learning to ski, again from the stamina/endurance standpoint.

    But the question still remains:

What is the difference between God and a Ski Instructor?

Yes. Wisconsin or Minnesota, I think.

Fat people can ski. But watching them try to learn snowboarding is sad.
