why no documentary on Warren Miller?

Been thinking about this for the last few weeks. With Warren being in the media recently with the Level 1 deal, I am wondering why no one has ever taken on his story before? For a young guy like me who didn't grow up on Warren Miller films, it would be interesting to see how he developed and helped to shape the sport.

He's been in it longer than most of us have been alive, and could arguably be considered as not only one of the pioneers of modern skiing, but action sports in general. He is also probably one of the most popular individuals in skiing. Most non-skiers could probably drop his name. I for one would definitely see it. Would be interesting to see a lot of today's companies reflect on Warren and his impact, and how skiing in large part now is completely shaped by films, athletes, etc, which he really helped to pioneer...

    Just curious. Thoughts?

WME (Warren Miller Entertainment) own the rights to him. So in order to do a documentary you would have to do it with them, throught them, for them, etc. No matter which way you cut, it will cost a lot of money, i.e. WME will get a lot of money, and you will not. For sentimental or industry purposes though, I think it would be kind of cool.

Could it be that a big company owns the rights to Warren Miller's name appearing in a movie. Warren doesn't want to work with the copyright holder, nobody else can do it??

It is a great idea, and it will probably will be done at some point. The man probably had more to do with the growth of snow culture than any other person or development in the last 100 years- he literally reached millions of people, and probably exposed a good portion of them to skiing. However as it stands now I think it would be very difficult (as was said) to do this kind of movie without his archival footage, can't make it with just pictures. He has so many stories to tell...

How about onea those Lifetime Achievement Awards they give out at the Academy Awards each year? He's certainly deserving IMO.

Don't quote me on this but I smell one coming..maybe Powder Awards and/or X-Dance. At 85 years old his relevance within skiing has never been stronger.

It would be cool to see something to tribute him now rather than posthumously. My 95 year old Grandmother who grew up skiing at Aspen ($0.35 for a pass...) still talks about meeting him when they were both much, much younger. I guess money and lawyers are what makes the world go around these days.

FWIW, at the Seattle Level 1 premier last week (where Warren Miller showed up), he mentioned that he's spending his days writing his autobiography. I'm guessing that may very well lead to something else.. but who knows?

Well I was going to go to that which was probably my only chance to ever see Warren Miller in person(mainly wanted to go to it for that and to be with the friends I had there), then I got a call that they were sold out of tickets so I couldn't go. Then I was told the movie was fucking epic. So I hate all of you there, just a little bit.

If you don't see a Warren Miller documentary this year, you'll be one year older when you do?

Maybe someone should make a "faux" documentary on, say, Marren Willer, and not officially license shit...

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the Level One flick in Seatle was far from sold out. You could have had an entire row to yourself! It was kind of depressing how empty the place was.

The Jackson Hole Air Force movie was great and opened... I was less into the Level One flick but it was great to see Warren in person.

man, definitely a project id love to take on. only way it could be properly done is to have most of the industry in on it...an entirely collaborative effort, as difficult and unrealistic as that sounds. Rarely, could an entire sport say that they owe a lot of it to a single person.

Oh yeah! Let's document the guy who documented skiing! Great!

    It would be gripping:
"In 19XX Warren Miller Produced (Insert Ski Movie Title). It was a big success, so the next year he went on to Film (Another Ski Movie)! Here is a film of Warren Miller Filming!"

Honestly, I'd rather appreciate what he did by watching some of his movies. I think that the movies of today don't have the same 'soul' that his old movies did. (I liked Claim - are there others?

I would love to see a compilation tape of some of his best moments and then a short part of him just sitting by a fire talking about all the adventures he has been on. I have not missed a film in my 35 years of this spinning ball...can't say I wasn't a little sad to not even hear his voice this year but knew it was coming...crazy to not at least have Warren Miller involved in some way :-(

He has put out a few books that document how he got into the whole skiing and movie thing. They are about 1/2 reality, and half bull shit , but it is amazing what he did to be able to ski every day back in those days. Camp in a tiny trailer with no heat in the various ski area parking lots for a winter, storing food in a snow bank, sneaking on lifts, the infamous ketchup soup and fish cracker lunchs, ski instructing so as to meet people who would invite them to lunch/dinners, then stuffing their pockets with food for the next day. Warren definetely was one of the original 'dirt bag' skiiers and a maggot before anyone coined that term.

Posting this video around for everyone to see who has been following the Level 1/Warren Miller Entertainment debacle.

This is some footage of the Swift.Silent.Deep and Refresh showing last Saturday at the King Cat Theater in Seattle. As you know, Warren Miller the man himself was there to show his support of the new generation of ski films. Warren is featured in both films and got on stage with Josh Berman and JK.

A little later on in the video Warren jokes and says something like "Maybe you watched my videos as a kid and I screwed you up for life..." I think we can all agree on that!
