Bobby was playing with Rat Dog in my hometown. My wife was "wicked" pregnant so we didn't buy tics. We went down and hung out in the back lot of the casino ballroom with a shitton of other deadheads and as many cops. The cops were prepared for a riot and everyone just sat and hung peacefully burning candles and listening to Bobby. It was wonderful and horrible all at the same time.

I'll never forget how many yrs Jerry has been gone as my first son was born in '95. The weird memory from that night was thinking my kid will never see the Grateful Dead play. It bummed me out.

Yeah, my daughter is always asking me about the boys and it's hard to articulate the essence of the scene to an eight year old. I finally hit some sort of paydirt when I likened their concerts to going to your own birthday party several times a year, only it's everybody there's birthday and the balloons are magic. She seemed to understand.

Augusta was the last show I saw until the '91 Boston shows, and that voice was part of the reason I gave it up

Hampton 89 was definitely the best I saw (I put New Year's shows in their own category) but I don't think for a minute that was the boys at their best. 77-78 or 70-72, IMO.

I came across an interview of Bob Dylan when he was asked about playing with the boys and this quote stood out -

Dylan certainly had a unique view of Deadheads from the stage, and he takes some time in his book to analyse the differences in crowds between them and a band like The Rolling Stones. “There is a big difference in the types of women that you see from the stage when you are with the Stones compared to the Dead,” Dylan says. “With the Stones, it’s like being at a porno convention. With the Dead, it’s more like the women you see by the river in the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? Free-floating, snaky and slithering like in a typical daydream. Thousands of them.”
