The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.
On a recent cold, rainy Saturday I put in my airbuds and started 5-8-77, something I hadn't done straight through in a long time. Hours passed as I put away Christmas and knocked out various other long-delayed storage projects. When it was over my work was done and I had a big ol smile on my face, a few hours of time to myself in another place.
I still call it The Jake.
I love doing that ^^^^. I’ve been doing that today, but listening to third wave ska ATM.
Stanford Continuing Studies has a Grateful Dead course this spring taught by David Gans. https://continuingstudies.stanford.e...-grateful-dead
In ninty-five, I gave a presentation on the Grateful Dead in a college class. The course was “Free Form Jazz - Nineteen Sixty to Present.” Taught by Anthony Davis. We listened to and analyzed the musical evolution of some of the greats: both Coltrane’s, Dolphins, Coleman, etc., which included deeper dives into what and how they were doing their thing, including amazing demos by the instructor. For my “lecture,” I broke down the Dark Star in Live Dead. After my presentation, the instructor discussed how he’d just spent the winter break writing and recording with Dave Murray. Murray had just been an opener for the dead’s Mardi Gras shows. The only other student presentation that I remember from that class was a woman getting an MFA in dance present on hip hop, which including some dancing by her and few friends. Such a rad class.
