September turns and month 71 in a row, check. Thanks for the beta Scralp, much nicer to stay within 1/2 hour of home rather than head to Shasta for our usual September turns spot...hopefully next month will provide fresh turns like the last 2 years.

So whose got the latest, greatest stoke on what El Nino will bring this year?

And nice one on getting this going so early Raccoon bro, stoke level steadily rising as each fall night is getting colder

    Sorry, I've been away.

    AKB: Congratulations!

mmcpheet I added the new links

Dark Star: Wow, that's almost 2 whole years! Good job!

Everyone else: If you could suggest a place for links or new info you want added that would be great. Also, if you think I have misfiled a link or group of them let me know where you would like them placed or how you would like them arranged. Anything that will make it easier to use or understand.

    okbye

Anybody know where to find historical opening dates for various Tahoe resorts, KW in particular? The resorts like to project mid-November openings, but recently the track record has been poor.

I know it happens - I can remember jumping cornices on turkey day...

Here is what I just found on the the Farmers Almanac site for South Lake Tahoe long term forecast. I like the early November stormy period...

Annual Weather Summary: November 2009 to October 2010

Winter temperatures will be near normal in the north, on average, with above-normal rainfall. In the south, temperatures and rainfall will be below average. The stormiest periods will occur in early November, mid- and late December, and late January. Expect the coldest periods to occur in early and late December, early January, and early February.

April and May will be cooler and rainier than normal.

Summer will be slightly cooler and rainier than normal, with the hottest periods in early and late July, early August, and late September.

September and October will be warmer and drier than normal.

Isn't that the antithesis of what happens during an El Nino event?

Welcome. What we forgot to mention and Schralp alluded to in another thread - beware of "a moderate breeze over the ridge top". In Cohee speak, that usually means 85 mph gusts. Bring your skins and avy gear. If the lifts shut down, it is still a decent hill.

LSL - you know KW makes almost no snow. The WROD there is not even worth it with a pass. In the last eight years, I can remember only one season that they waited to open once they got enough snow - and that was a 10 day delay. They have been pretty good about running lifts as soon as they could. 2004 was a perfect example. I remember riding 6 and they had to have a rope line at Rabbits. It was gnar beyond that... unless you knew your way around. I expect they will open the first Fri or Sat after they get enough to build a ramp off the lift and groom a single run down.

AS FOR WEATHER. We are getting some fairly decent mid September storms rolling through the NPAC. We don't usually get a swell like this weekend's until late Oct or early Nov. If this cycle keeps up, we are in for a good start. From Stormsurf.

The belief at this time is this developing El Nino is past the critical juncture, and will survive in some fashion with effects continuing in the atmosphere until at least the Spring of next year. All data suggests this will not be a strong El Nino, more likely a moderate one. NOAA's most recent update today forecasts the same outcome... The next milestone we're looking for is development of the next Active Phase of the MJO, expected sometime near the 3rd week of Sept. The models (as of 9/10) indicate it is forming as expected. Also water temps need to hold if not build (as is happening now). A final confirmation should be possible in late-Sept. In the mean time, the current Inactive Phase currently in-progress faltered as it passed over the West Pacific, a good thing in that it allowed the prime area for Westerly Wind Bursts to remain unscathed, allowing the warm pool to continue to build. Strong El Ninos bring lot's of bad weather to the US West Coast, along with the potential for storm and swell enhancement. A moderate El Nino provides storm and swell enhancement, a gentle but steady push/momentum in-favor of storm development rather than the manic frenzy of a strong El Nino, but without all the weather associated with a strong event. So in many ways a moderate El Nino is more favorable from a surf perspective

Figured as much when I was woken up by lightning thunder and hail here in Bezerkeley before dawn and decided to bail on my backpacking trip. Any precip or moisture enough to mitigate the fire hazard out there?

Eh....no. I think that would require a cyclone of biblical proportions.
    Or the first snowfall.

I've been busy as hell, and decided I needed to get my swerve on with some skanks. That means that I need to find the diviest bar in town. So off I go.

In my travels I found a bar. But, the right bar?

With a poster like this, I may have just found my place...

I thought I should go in and see for sure if I was in the right bar when I saw this:

When you find a cigarette machine that has more motorcycle parts than cigarettes then you're certain to have found the diviest bar.

I was minding my own business when the bad started to play, and who should I find playing in the band?

What? You can't tell by the HD video my phone takes?

It's Jim S!!! The band's name is Jack Ruby. If you get a chance go see 'em. I'm jealous, he had skanks crawling all around him...

I think I'm going to start my own band to get skanks, any of you play an instrument? You don't have to be good. We could call ourselves "Bud Dwyer"!

    Just thought I'd share.

Thanks man. Did you record us with Neumann mics running into API and Neve preamps direct to Studer tape? That sound quality is pristine.
