    Birthday = Sage 6 wt!!

Dam she's a good woman! and yes she's got a ring on her finger!

so i've never fished a fly rod worth more than about 75 bucks... someone tell me what i'm in for please. i seem to catch plenty of fish on my cheap-o Cabelas branded rods, now i've got a 9' 6 wt Sage XP to sling around.

You will hate it. Just save yourself the grief and send it to me.

Nice really fast action rod. A bit much for smaller streams and rivers IMHO.

Agree with MTM. Where do you fish primarily? What species?

Yeah, it'll be much faster and crisper than your el cheepo rod. It'll throw the line for you.

Sweet stick, I've got a few XP's still that I can't stand to sell. The sweet thing about those rods, especially the 6, is you can line them many different ways and make them super versatile.

that rod is for fishing some of the big rivers in maine where you often use 2 nymphs and a couple weights.... and it's windy.... and raining! the fish in there are a combination of landlocked salmon and brookies..... to 12 pounds!

since i'm such a cheap bastard i'm considering returing it for a Temple Forks 6 weight and a decent reel. I'm just not sure i can justify a $500 rod!

You could also return it and buy the same 6wt XP from Cabela.com for $395 and put the extra $100 towards a nice reel.

Edit: Cabelas just raised the price $100

You'll be wanting to kick yourself in the @ss if you do that. The XP 6 weight is a sweet casting rod with a lot of backbone. It has a soft enough tip to help protect tippets. If you like to throw big streamers in the wind, too, the XP is a dream machine. It's perfect for what you have planned.

I used an XP 6 weight for five years as a trophy trout, light steelhead, and smallmouth bass rod. In my opinion, TFO doesn't have a rod in its current line up that performs as well as the XP.

Edit: The best lines for all around usage are the XP are the Scientific Anglers Mastery GPX and the Rio Grand. I used a SA Mastery Steelhead line with mine because I wanted the longer belly for better line control when dead drifting and swinging for steehead.

I have the 696-4XP and it's a great rod. I use it mosly for salmon and steelhead with a floating line and is a great light bonefish rod also. I overline it with a 7 wt and also a custom 8wt shooting line and it is one of my favorite rods. I leave the sink tip work to the 8 wt and Spey...enjoy.

In other xp news, the reddington cxp is actually a bit faster than the sage in the 4wt. Would have never guessed that. Talk about a versatile rod.

This seems way out of place on a ski forum where everyone skis 125 waist 200cm skis as their daily ride (which I don't). A 6-weight XP is way more versatile than you are giving it credit for. You should thank your wife and keep the rod.

I bit the bullet and bought a 4wt. ZXL back in June. Probably one of the best purchases I have ever made. I don't know much about the XP, but the difference between it and a cheaper rod should be ridiculous. My ZXL seems to read my mind. I joke that I only have to think about where I want my fly to land and it does. If you decide to get rid of it let me know, as I am on the market for a 6wt.

My friend has that exact rod and I have tossed it a few times. It is fuggin' SICK! Do NOT trade it in for crap. If 72twenty and troutbum don't follow through with their offers, I call third dibs yo!

to those of you who called dibs, i actually returned it. Turns out the over charged my lady friend 100 bones on the rod. I traded it in for a TFO 6 wt and a very very very nice reel. I know everyone on the board will frown when they hear that, but i've gotten some awesome reviews on the TFO and would rather have a rod and reel than just a rod.

the real reason for the post... last i looked Cabelas had the Sage 6 wt's on their website for $395,,,, get em' while they're hot!
