    Degrees of Spatula separation...

Reading the article about the birth of the Spatula in Powder's tribute to McShlonkey got me thinking. According to the article (and I've seen this in other places as well), there were fewer than 1000 pairs made in total. Although most have moved on to newer fun-shape variations, they had a cult following amongst the Maggots over the years and I know some of us still ski them (me included). I wonder how many pairs of them we can account for over the years?? I bet we can get up to something like 70%.

I'll start - one pair of Spats, bought from skideeppow, in '06 I think.

I had two pairs. Bought both from Iver (Ivor?), the Head rep who had a garage full somehow. He could fill in the blanks on many pairs' destinies if anyone knows him.

    Dig the thread, great idea.

Ivor is the Head rep in Utah I think he may even still have a few pair if I rember corectly from talking to him last season. When I see him next I will see what I can find out.
If ski companies didn't make new skis every year I wouldn't have to get new skis every year.

Proud owner of one pair bought second hand from a guy that skied them one day and couldn't handle them.
I have more modern reverse camber skis but I still choose to ski my Spats on what I call storm days when its pow all day and everything is getting filled in continuously.
    Will never part with them.

I've got a pair that has got to be my favorite ski I've ever owned. Really changes the way you approach soft snow.
Seems like no matter where I go it's already Turked out...

I bought my from Shane out of his garage, and still ski them many days a year! love em, even though I have Kuros (my deep day ski), I prob'ly spend more time on my Spats than any other ski in the quiver.

Long before I had a computor or even knew what a maggot was, I shared a lift with this guy riding spats. First pair I'd seen. I remember thinking why is this guy skiing on waterskis and wearing jeans
I'm stoked he still has em and we're good enough friends that if we do get to share a pow day this season he'll let me ride em.

I'm pretty sure the guy you're referring to lives about 30 minutes from me. I would say it is very likely he and I possess the only two pairs of Spatulas in the state.

I've got two pair. The first was one of the prototype orange pair given to me by Pete Turner (co-designer) from Volant to test out right after the Wheat Ridge plant closed down. I remember my first run on these 7 years ago changed my view on skiing soft snow. Shane marked the boot center line on these himself with sharpie, which has since worn off.

The skis that changed my life.

My other (newer) pair is still mounted up in the basement ready to go if the mood strikes.

I bought my pair from him. I loved and hated them, then sold them to Ty_Webb, who sold them to some girl I saw on the ski hill with mags last year. She may be a mag, I don't know. It was the weirdest thing to see my skis out there skiing on someone else's feet.

I bought my first pair from Shane in 03, skied them mostly at Squaw until they wore out in 04, then bought a second pair from someone on EBay. I took these with me to NZ. Boy did people just not get the idea.... I only got one semi-decent powder day at Temple Basin in 05 to let them run like they were desinged to do. Never really skied those that much down there.

About two weeks before Shane died, I sold my newer pair to someone in gear swap on this site to raise $ for a new pair of rev/rev, as I wanted to try a different design that was easier on my tired legs at a resort. While I regret selling them, at least they will get skied by the guy that bought them (I hope!). I thus have no spatulas left, however I have promised rights to use a spare pair a friend has if I ever get to go heli skiing. I am 100% using spatulas if I ever get the chance to drop a line in AK. I couldn't even think of using anything else in totally fresh snow on a steep, fluted face.

So yeah, I bought two pairs of spats and they changed the way I ski forever. Guess I can join the crowd there.

I bought a pair from natty dread in '05, skied them for a few years, and then sold them on to some other bridger dirtbag on the board. Can't remember the guy's handle.

Funny story how I came upon my first pair. I went to Red Lodge from Bozeman for a huge dump at the end of their season. This guy was in the parking lot at lunch cussing his new skis. I asked him what gives. He started in how he bought the latest greatest pow ski called the " fucking spatula". Then said how they suck and he didn't know how a company could fuck up a ski so bad. I knew exactly what they were but could not afford them new. I asked him if he wanted to sell. " Fuck yeah, $200 and they are yours!" Done and done. They had 997's as well. Sold them in '06, FUCK!
