    Fire in Jackson?

All of a sudden the valley is shrouded in smoke and the sun looks crimson to the naked eye. Must be a good forest fire from this afternoon's storm. Anyone know where its burning?? Looks extra smokey to the south and west.
Skiing, whether you're in Wisconsin or the Alps, is a dumbass hick country sport that takes place in the middle of winter on a mountain at the end of a dirt road.

There are few wildfires in Box Elder county, UT. Sky to the west of Cache Valley is orange and very smokey.

Weird for sure. Doesn't smell smokey. As the storm JUST rolled thru, and had a lot of rain with it, it would be surprising that a fire could get that big that fast. According to NIFC, there's only about 1400 acres involved in Idaho between 2 fires, and 1000 acre one south of Vernal, I wonder if the Vernal one might be blowing up this way with the storm??

Its cleared up a little, but when I first posted, it absolutely smelled like wood smoke. I live near South Park, and the smell was strong enough inside my house to get me to go outside and check it out. Beautiful, blood red sunset right now!

The NIFC/NICC report is usually at least a day behind and more concerned with significant and/or large fire activity that affects things on a regional or national level. Looking at a lower level of dispatch may give you better, more real-time perspective if they have a news and notes section. For instance, in eastern Idaho:
    http://www.idahofireinfo.blm.gov/east/currentfires.htm

I couldn't find anything similar for the Teton dispatch:
    http://gacc.nifc.gov/egbc/dispatch/wy-tdc/index.html

...or the Eastern Basin Coordination Center:
    http://gacc.nifc.gov/egbc/index.htm

...but a lot of dispatch and coordination centers do have more timely info, like this one for the Southwest:
    http://gacc.nifc.gov/swcc/predictive...news_notes.htm

    You have to dig.

yeah, you're right, i just had the opinion, right or wrong, that the smoke was brought in with the big winds from an existing large fire to our S SW, not from a recent start locally...

Could be. It can be really hard to tell when there's a lot of fire all over. Big-ass grass fires come and go in southern Idaho and stay under NIFC's radar because they're over quickly.

yeah i just read about that, we were up at the dirt jumps on top of city creek and could smell smoke pretty much all the way home to sandy. it was crazy, there was this nasty layer that the sun actually "set" behind that was well above the horizon, sometime before 7:30-8. couldn't see the oquirrhs or even down towards sugarhouse.

I was living in Jackson, corner of Millward and Gill, during the great fires of 1988. It was weird with the blood red moon in the morning. Only half of Jellystone burned during that summer so I suppose there is still plenty left to burn. lol
