    East Cost Surfing

Say I was going on an East Coast ski tour next summer. What spots would you consider must-hits for culture/surf/beauty?

The East does cost surfing. As for a ski tour, the surf can be gnar...

Maine, hands down. But I am biased. Not for culture, but surf breaks and beauty.

    Other good locales:

New Hampshire has perhaps the most quality breaks packed in just 16 miles of coastline.

Rhode Island. Ruggles in Newport. Point Judith. Manasquan (sp).

Long Island. Jones Beach Breakwater. Points on the tip. Plenty of beach break in between. Rockaway, Queens, NYC. Oh, NYC has some culture.

Outer Banks, NC. Lighthouse, Frisco Pier, elsewhere. Not much culture, but plenty of empty peaks if you just walk down the beach

In NJ, Casino Pier is pretty iconic. If you longboard, Manasquan Inlet is a must.

I currently live in Newport, R.I. I can tell you that the breaks here literally smell like human excriment.

I would head farther out on LI towards montauk or the hamptons for surfing.

    A good tour might be

Maine -> NH -> RI -> ferry to Montauk -> Rockaway -> Jersey and points south.

Lots of local culture at every stop if you think about it for a second.

During a strong south swell, pick just about any spot on the south shore of LI. Especially in late summer/early fall, the area tends to get HARD at least once for a few days. Montauk has some decent spots as well, but it's now illegal to surf there between 4/1 and 12/14 off Montauk Point SP (Ditch Plains might be allowed though I'm not sure).

If you can, stick around until October:

Do the tour in reverse order as listed, that way you can ride the swell as it moves up the coast.

Dirty Jerz- Montauk, R.I. Cape Cod, Cape Ann, yada yada.

I'm sure you know of Magicseaweed.com and surfline.com, They will list conditions and locations of the most common surf breaks.

The guys that forecast for magicseaweed are eating the magic seaweed. That site blows for any real forecasting.

Surfline is decent. Wetsand.com is comprehensive around here.

It is hard to travel and ride a swell north, IMO. The swell moves much faster than we do, especially getting around New England.

Watch the swell. Souths have a hard time getting around the Cape, but when they do, points north light up. Points and reefs in the north. Mostly beach break from Long Island south (except the tip). RI can be classic with a big south.

Did I mention Ruggles and Green Point before?

sounds like an epic TR. make sure you have a decent camera and laptop to document this epic adventure.
I'd start in Key West and finish in Bar HArbor Maine. There's a ton of good spots up and down the east coast.
If you have an Iphone, get the free surf report app from Oakley, it rocks.
I've bookmarked a dozen spots and check them daily just to get an idea where the surf is globally. NH Brazil Bali and NZ are my fav spots.
Cape Cod outer beaches gets some great swell when a storm passes through and the wind backs off.The pic is in Wellfleet.
If you kitsurfed, I'd say you had both bases covered. Paddle for waves in no wind and rip the blown out waves on a kite.
The new thang is SUP but I still think it's ghey but haven't really given it a shot in bigger fatter waves, I think I'd rather ride my 9'2" Bear big wave gun and still have my dignity.

I cant really speak for any southern spots, but MA and RI...def. check out Narragansett, pretty dependable longboard waves even in the summer, and Point Judith when it gets decent. i just happened to be there last Sat and got clean head high sets on the south side....with one other guy in the water with me.
And the Cape, i like Welfleet and truro a lot, if you hit it on a good day, its like Willy showed, clean and fun, sandy bottoms with an amazing view looking in at the National Seashore. Even if its small when the tides right, fun long breaks.

    rally

I think I'd add a kayak to the equation too. just for exploring and the occasional surf session.
Newport RI is a DO NOT MISS on your trip. Such a great town for partying etc.
1st and 2nd are crowded on a good swell but a really easy wave to catch.
    Ruggles, not so much.
what are you getting for a rig ?
may I recommend the EM 50 urban assault vehicle ?

If you get to RI you should spend a day around Westerly to get the beach vibe, especially at Dickies (top photo) at Misquamicuit, and the lighthouse at Watch Hill (after Labor Day). It's like "Rich Man/Poor Man" within 5 miles. In September with a south swell, clear sky, and offshores it really is classic New England.

    Dickies:

    Watch Hill Lighthouse Point:

PS: That ^^^ is a SUP.

If you want to take a break from the hustle of the North East head down to the Outer Banks while every fuck hole it seems rocks the OBX sticker the banks offer some of the best surfing on the EC.

The shelf is much smaller in this area as compared to the rest of the EC and they seem to catch every storm in the area. The north generally has more people though Hatteras gets pretty crowded. Duck Pier, Corolla and Laundromats are the most popular up north while Frisco Pier dominates the south. There are a number of inlets south of Ocracoke that offer truly unbelievable surf by EC standards but they are tough to get to without a boat.
You're gonna stand there, owning a fireworks stand, and tell me you don't have no whistling bungholes, no spleen spliters, whisker biscuits, honkey lighters, hoosker doos, hoosker donts, cherry bombs, nipsy daisers, with or without the scooter stick, or one single whistling kitty chaser?

^^^ I've had some of my sickest EC barrels around Avon. Always wanted to find those inlets. We walked to the end of the island that Frisco is on one time. The wrap was insane.

Maine a little creative searching and you are surfing solo. Even fewer crowds than the Outer Banks. I used to have to look for people to come surf the better reefs with. Ogunquit is really the only crowd magnet north of Rye, NH. Maybe Higgins, but eventhat is usually pretty empty.

Nothing if you don't mind becoming a mermaid. At least temporarily.

Unfortunately, untrue. Higgins is quite crowded nowadays (not meaning just summer).

The sand moves so much on the Outer Banks that everything only lasts until the next storm.

I loved Maine's surf and lack of crowds but god damn is the water cold. Its july and the water is 60 degrees.

theres a spot an hour north of higgins that is just as good as any sand bar i've ever surfed. heading up there next south swell. Once Maine starts to jaught east there is so much coastline it's unfathomable, so many mysto spots.

That is toasty by the standard here. But then again, it never drops much below 50 either.
