how to build a wood core?

I'm making the wood core (or trying to) for a pair of skis in wood shop right now and I'm wondering if anyone out there can give me some help. The core is going to be made of maple primarily and I'm really struggling right now on how I'm going to profile it. I'm making a pair of R/R skis. I get how to make the shape (meaning sidecut, width etc.) but in terms of thickness I'm at a total loss since ski cores arent the same thikness in throughout. I would really appreciate some help on this from anyone who has made their own skis or knows how to. Thanks.

I've read that entire sight a hundred times and it doesnt tell you how to profile the core. It does mention using a planer but i dont get how you could make it plane different depths because how would you know when to stop and then run it bac through. Sorry if that doesn't make sense. Anyways, still looking for help. Thanks.

    you're welcome

i've found that the actual thickness dimensions of the core aren't super important (within reason). More important is the amount of taper you have from the thickest point down to the thinnest point.

our first skis were 3mm-13mm-3mm but they didn't taper very much, so most of the core was probably 10mm thick, with 3mm in the tip and tail. They were stiff as hell, no flex, weigh 14 lbs (no bindings). We fixed our crib and made the cores taper down faster, which gave us a much nicer flex. We are using 2-12-2 now (which is pretty rough estimates since our crib doesn't always give the same dimensions for some reason), and the skis are still stiff but ski very nice.

keep reading the forums on skibuilders. any question you can come up with will be answered over there. and if it isn't already answered, ask away and i'm sure somebody would like to talk to you about it.

good luck. ski building has been a lot more work and money than my brother and I originally planned, but the rewards are worth it.
