    Supposed to tip bootfitter?

Being a brokeass I hope not, but I'm guess it might be customary considering the amount of personal effort that goes into bootfitting.

    Usual 20%?

Sounds like you think it was deserved, so tip based on what you think it was worth.

I've been given nothing often, and $50 too. The Tip seems to have nothing to do with how hard, long, weird the work was...

beer is more often given then cash, but cash is better from my standpoint. (fresh baking is the best)

At least with as bad as my AT boot liners smell I bring the whole damn shop cookies or beer just for having to be in the same room.

He just did a liner mold and a toe punch on brand-new boots, but I don't want to be a dick or anything. I'll pick up some quality brew.

I get greased all the time. Usually a twenty, once it was $300.00- stayed late on Christmas Eve. Hops, corn and grape based beverages get left on a regular basis.

Much of my income in the summers (mountain bike guide) comes from tips- so I tip everybody most of the time. This is especially true for people I can plainly see are hustling. I respect that.

There are so many jokers out there that people are super happy just to get quality boot help. Sometimes a genuine "Thanks" is enough.

The best tips are the ones that show up a few days later. Getting greased a couple of twenties for squeezing some guy in at the last minute is great, but the best tips show up after the guy is done skiing for the week. These are worth $$$

Agreed...I think that someone who has worked hard to gain the expertise and invests the time deserves a tip.

...in Chamo there is a fridge down at the bootfitters. You tip the guys with beer, that they put in there,so while you are waiting for your soles too cool or for the guys to fix your boot, they always ask you if u want a beer. That fridge is always full...

I've never given a cash tip, but I'll almost always bring a sixer for a tech or a good bootfitter - usually before the work is done. If I'm asking for something difficult/time consuming, and the job is done well, I'll follow up with another sixer, and usually put in a good word with the shop owner.

For that...yeah it's appreciated. Generally I'll get beer. Occasionally cash, once a hundred dollar bottle of Tequila... needless to say, that customer gets treated like a king when he walks through the door.

Yes it's appreciated... especially when you want something like an overnight job done before the shop closes. Before I worked at a boot shop I ALWAYS tipped at least a 6 pack, it's just a no brainer. If someone who loves skiing makes skiing better for me, and also makes little money, show them some love.
