    Windows Vista Audio Device Problem

    I hate Vista.

    My laptop crashed after bringing it out of sleep mode (an issue of Vista's from what I hear) and in the process it lost it's connection to the audio device so I can't hear any sounds.

    I'm getting a red X near the audio icon in my toolbar and it's saying "audio device is not properly installed" or something to that affect. I'm not even seeing an audio device in my systems manager. I don't think it's a driver issue as I have one installed, it's more that it doesnt recognize the hardware.

    Any advice is appreciated.

    Try uninstall/reinstall:
    Control panel->Device mangler->Sound hoohaw->Uninstall.

    Then reinstall.

    Laptops are a bitch since every one of the fuckers has it's own proprietary arcane bus layout. So PnP fumbles on laptops a lot.

    Thanks bustah. I should have been more specific in saying that no audio/sound even appears on my device mangler so can't do the uninstall thing.

    You'll need to contact your laptop maker then and ask for the drivers and reinstall them. Miscrosquat doesn't ship the drivers for all devices, so it's likely that the sp1 upgrade didn't install them.

    Had the same problem with my desktop running Vista for a while. I spent a while on the phone with Microsoft and Gateway both only to have a buddy of mine figure out the problem. Turns out the audio device became disabled in CMOS somehow. If the above isn't the issue, go into CMOS when you reboot and check that.
