Utah liqour laws... scan and track your info...

So they want to get rid of private clubs.... Yay.

    But....

They want to scan your license and keep your personal info on file so if they need to, they can prove you were at a bar.

Horrible horrible horrible. What the hell is wrong those fucking assclowns!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I use credit cards at bars, so it wouldn't be difficult for someone with a subpoena to determine where I've been....but the state tracking my whereabouts as a matter of policy crosses a line of acceptability. Opt in, not opt out.

    Link please.

I'll happily let them track my MEMBERSHIP through my license, rather than having to carry around 28 different membership cards/slips.

So what if it could be tracked that I went to the bar, one look in the glass bin in our basement and anyone would know we're drinkers. Fuck em, they want to waste time tracking me around...that's fine, more busy people that don't have time to go skiing.

I went to a bar in LoDo two weeks ago. He put my id in some kind of machine. I asked him what it was and he says, "it copies your info incase we have an incident at the bar and need to get in touch with you."

That's just swell. The bars are tracking us. Tinfoil hat on.

yeah, man, there is nothing wrong with the government maintaining a database of where you have been. Nothing at all.

Here's the article 'beater failed to link:

I'm in favor of doing away with the private clubs, but not in favor of having the bar record my consumption. It's bullshit they are trying to link the latter to the former. I'm told that in the old days the local bishops used to go look at the membership rolls of the bars in their wards at the DABC so they could find out who in their flock was straying from the straight and narrow. This would make that far easier to do, and would make DUI prosecution easier. Given the choice, I would stick with the private club system.

Last time I went to a club in Vancouver this was common practice. Since then a citizen took up a complaint with the civil liberties association. I'm not sure what happened after that.

I know in Alberta the practice of ID scanning has been banned because " [a club] has no reasonable purpose for doing so"

In my area there is one club/pub that does this and I make a point of not going there. It's a country/western bar and I never did really like it anyways. I think there was a problem with rednecks beating the piss out of each other on the front steps and around the pool tables.

The private club system is way better than this thuggish police state proposal. Whenever something like this comes up, sanctimonious feigned concern for “underage drinking” is ALWAYS the excuse as if one has anything to do with the other. 1984 indeed.

Pretty sure this has nothing to do with underage drinking, but finding out where the Drunk Driver got loaded.

what the? hehe...thats hillarious. ive been to quite a few states and never ran into that. Is that a utah thing? Where do you join the "club"? Is it like through the county or state? that is truly unfuckingbelievable. I couldnt imagine if i had flown in there, went to the bar at the airport and they asked me for my "club" card. I would have been floored. I guess my initial thought would have been there was some club that got you discounted drinks and would have told bartender, im not part of the club so carry on, hehe....

It's a technicality, no different than paying a cover charge. Once you're a member you can invite friends in as your guests, and the common courtesy is for those guests to buy you a drink.

Oh, try ordering a Long Island Iced Tea sometime in UT. The bartender's response will make you giggle.

Harrington's Wine & Liquors in Chelmsford, MA has a crazy policy when you buy there if you are under 25. At every register counter there is a redish/clear plastic circle that has a hand outline on it. They place your ID on it and you have to put your hand on the plate with your thumb holding your ID. It takes a digital scan of your handprint and ID. Then they have you look at a camera and take your picture. I asked them WTF this was all about, they said for liability reasons due to age.

I didn't stop me from going there because they had a great selection but come on... that's a little too big brother for my liking.

According to that link, the scanning of IDs is to see if they are valid. As long as no information is recorded who cares if they look at your ID vs. scanning the bar code. CA bars have had scanners to insure valid id for a long time. I always get weird looks from them when I show my old school Utah id. I know there were some rumors to wanting to track consumption, but there were all sorts of problems with that and it appears to have gone away. As for the demise of private clubs.... should have happened long ago IMO.

Never mis-underestimate the State Legislature or the fact that this has not yet become law. In any event, I hope you are right, but then how would merely scanning for age and or validity have any effect on, to quote the article, “reducing overconsumption and stopping drunken driving.” I guess if it only compared the scanned ID with a database of valid driver licenses… but then the data is recorded.

Dont get me wrong, I dont trust our legislators in anyway. But the scanning and not recording any info, just makes it harder for underage drinkers. Most states have bar codes on licenses anyway to help avoid forging licenses or multiple valid licenses being issued. But all we can do is see what the legislators do. After all they have made it clear for years that they are up there with their own agenda, not the agenda of their constituents.

Hey at least this means that drinks can still be mixed behind a bar instead of behind the kitchen.

Surprise, government-ran organizations are tracking your info. We were living in an Orwellian world before this.

UTA monitors where I go and what time, and the state can monitor where and what I drink.
    So much for my alibis...

Great. More tracking of what I do. More profit for the private company that makes the scanning equipment. Higher operating costs for the bars. Higher taxes to cover the cost of maintaining the database. Another hackable database with my private information.

Why is this the answer to removing the private club hassles? Why not do what every other state does? The state has enough PR bad will with current laws. This will be even worse.
