Smile Yup, Another Resort TR: Kirkwood + Iron Mountain

Kirkwood had the fluffiest snow in Tahoe Sunday. I know. I tested it with my face.

    Ok, things are looking good

    Rut-row

The skiing wasn't bad either. Here's a 2 minute resort video of amusing turns.

On our way home, We scoped out the remains of Iron Mountain Ski Resort for overnight trip potential.

The ski runs are loaded with teh epic. We wanted to know about the quality accommodations.

    This looks pleasant

I tried to get a closer look of the second floor,

but lost my balance for the second time today.

    Haunted Skis?

    Dhelihiker appears anxious about something

He started acting strange and busted out a window

    Welcome, have a pleasant stay

    What is that?

    Where are you going?

Dheli? Where are you? Dheli? is that you there?

Dhelihiker snapped out of it. We barely escaped with our lives.....

    Nice TR!

Makes me feel older that shit knowing that a place I skied in high school is now basically a ghost town!

Sweet video, Gerome! I especially like the part where I fall for no reason whatsoever. I don't remember that, but, then again, I fall a lot.

The only true master of the shmear is 666, I'm afraid only he's allowed to teach it.

Good vid. Gerome - what kind of camera do you use for all the vids you have on Viseo? Is that always a helmet cam that you also just film scenics, other people skiing with?

I have a sony HDR-HC7 handycam - pretty durable (it was in my front pocket when I faceplanted Kodak) and resistant to snow or water. If you go directly to the vimeo site, the video comes up in some HD flash version, there's also a download button there too, but the quality is pretty amazing connecting the camera directly to an HD tv. The downside is the shaky footage without a tripod is that much more noticable on HD.

I've figured out that my friends dont want to wait for me, so I sometimes ski with the camera in my hand. It works if I'm moving slow or in untracked snow, otherwise it looks bad. My helmet camera is too unreliable with too many cables and lower quality (not a pov).

Thanks for the info. Since my photography sucks, I was tentatively looking into expanding into video for TRs, etc... Want something light-weight since I will be carrying touring, etc...

Total jong on all things camera-related. Not that I am overly jonesing for POV stuff, but couldn't a good POV also somwhat be used as a make-shift handheld? You know, take off helmet, hold and film buddy, etc... (Although I guess it would be a pain since (i) no viewfinder and (ii) you would have to remount to helmet and hope angle is right).

I was doing just fine sitting on my ass watching bad movies until I saw this. Now I am officially jealous of you fuckers. Looks like some good times were had. And that snow looks killer. I want a piece of that. Oh well, glad the goods were got.

BTW, how was the lower Cirque skiing?

For some reason I'm really digging the Iron Mountain shots...especially this one:

Never did make it there, and I can only imagine how many times I drove past that place.

Great TR. Always meant to check out Iron Mountain when it was open but never did. Didn't they try (and fail) to turn it into a member's only ski area for a while?

Caveman, different video camera options are mostly just about what you want to make of it. I originally bought a helmet camera for my personal amusement in AK in 2005, my buddy who had a camera in a bulky waterproof case never used it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSijuWQgkQY I'm practicing with the video camera in ziplock bag in front pocket plus tiny tripod these days. Framing, composition and other photography skills still apply to video and a nice still photo is complete in itself. Video should tell a story. But then there's a whole photography forum of skilled professionals on here to really talk to.

Thanks. Hear you on that. For now I think I am just going to upgrade the still camera and work on better comp/angles. Can still get some good TR shots using stills (definitely need to replace my old Cannon point and shoot though).

the version i have on my site now is a bazillion times better than the youtube version. It doesn't have the timer though so those would mean nothing. I think there are a few more crashes too.
