Core Shot

Been tuning my skis for years but never had a core shot. First time out to JH and gouged the hell out of them.

Core shot is about 1/2 inch across and an inch long. From what I was reading the poor man's quick fix is to just melt some p-tex into the hole.

You guys have any recommendations that are different than above?

Sand, sand, sand, epoxy, cure, sand,sand, sand, if needed, more epoxy, cure, sand, sand, sand, and maybe some p-tex on top, "for good looks". P-tex alone on the core will never hold for any siginificant amount of time, whereas epoxy will bond to the core/fibreglass in a very effective manner.

There are more repair savvy mags here than I, though.

quick fix? just melt a little really hard/cold wax into it, then wax with all temp or whatever and ski them. the cold wax will last a good little bit... maybe 3-5 days or so.

I think i Put vinyl in mine, got it from some shop. That or its Ptex. Got a big one on my park skis, put this stuff in, and it hasn't gone anywhere.

Sorry didn't mean to say "quick" fix. Looking for an actual fix that will hold for a couple of seasons or is it recommended to have a pro shop fix it?

I was looking at one of the p-tex guns that came up in some thread. Would this be something someone would reccomend?

Here's our Base Repair section and options with links to a core shot repair page and the Ski Mender.

The Ski Mender tip will melt metal grip, ptex (drip candles with wax) or welding materials (ribbon, sticks or wire). For the core shot, I've had good luck using metal grip and topped with welding ribbon, wire or sticks, using the soldering iron. If you use epoxy instead of metal grip, you might try not epoxing to the surface and topping with a welding material.

Hard wax works well for small scratches, gouges and pretty well for easy, short term fixes to seal the core. Just don't brush as much after scraping and make sure your scraper is very sharp, use lighter and repetitive passes to avoid tear-out (same approach for base repairs). Depending on the grade/quality (high melt paraffin is best) of cold hard wax and the abrasiveness of the snow, it can last quite a while.

Take that shit to Pepi's or TVS and get a base weld. A little co-poly goes a long way to keeping your core dry! Welcome to the West.
