    Atomic binding recall

Atomic Skis USA Recalls Ski Bindings Due to Unexpected Release, Fall Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Alpine Ski Bindings

Units: About 125,000 (an additional 1.0 million were sold outside the U.S.)

Manufacturer: Atomic Skis GmbH, of Austria

Hazard: The heel housing of the bindings can crack, causing the binding to release unexpectedly. This can cause the skier to lose control or fall and suffer injuries.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received four reports of injuries, including a concussion and injuries to the shoulder and knee from falls.

Description: The recall affects the heel components of the following Atomic alpine ski bindings: Race 310, Race 412, RaceRace 310, RaceRace 412, Xentrix 310, Xentrix 311, Xentrix 412, C310, C311, C412, CR 310, CR 412, R 310, R 412, SX 310, SX 412, Device 311, Device 412, Centro 310, Centro 412, and Dynamic ADX 312, RD10, X412, Centro 412. The recall includes only those bindings manufactured from 1998 through 2002 The year of manufacture can be located on the underside of the heel lever.

Sold at: Authorized Atomic USA ski dealers nationwide from 1998 through 2005 for between $150 and $350.

    Manufactured in: Austria

Remedy: Consumers should stop using these ski bindings immediately and return them to any authorized Atomic Ski dealer for a free inspection and replacement of the heel component, if needed.

Consumer Contact: For additional information, contact Atomic Ski USA toll-free at (888) 535-7555 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. MT Monday through Friday; e-mail consumerserviceUS@atomicsnow.com; or visit the firm’s Web site at www.atomicsnow.com
Not particularly popular bindings amongst the mags, but I figure someone will care.

wife just told me this. I was like how the fuck do you know that shit?

So will MARKERS be recalled next?
If pre-releasing is a CPSC recall offense, I say they are next.

Actually a linkage in the heel piece breaks, 99 percent I have seen have been the 412. This gives you a new DIN setting of about 2!

I had a collection of good heels, and plastic afd center pieces for a long time, always offered warranty service or on the spot switch out- $20 for heel pieces, $10 for center plates. Went into our tip pool for the end of season shop dinner.

Don't even get me started about that piece of shit beta construction, great if you like concave bases, and case hardened edges that crack and spark showers out of the stone grinder. Hands down the worst construction ever.

On the other hand the newer binding (Neox) is heavy but bomber, no warranties in 3-4 years of selling them. And all the freeride skis next year will be wood core, laminate construction.

That's a whole lotta bindings to be recalled!

I notice that my Race 614's are not on the recall list, I guess the xtra metal in that binding is more durable. Something to be said for metal vs plastic ;D

But my toe housing shattered? Fuck mine are not on the list.

This doesn't have anything to do with Salomon, and the Ess bindings are the fucking problem.

Has anyone done the binding exchange?

I am about to sell some old Fisher Slalom skis with this binding. But, if the dealers are hooking up a new binding I might keep it for the swapout. If they are just replacng heel I'll sell the skis.

Anyone had an experience witht he recall yet?

I'm still looking for two replacement afd plates for 614 Xentrix.

The steel reinforced heel of the 614 and 618s eliminates the 412 issue.

... I'll accept anyone's used 191 R:EX (without blown edges) if you want to part with them. Thanks CoreShot, I'm loving your old pair..

Does anyone know what they will replace? My wife's got 412s on an old pair of R11's that haven't really had a problem. But if we can get new binders, it would be worth a trip to the shop.

    bump...

Did anyone ever go through with this recall exchange program? How did it work? Were they just swapping out heel pieces, or doing the whole binding? Are the replacements "new" as in recently made, or are they from the same era as the recalled ones? I have a pair of 412's in the basement that I was considering bringing in, but I wanted to know what to expect...

Atomic's warranty program is very good. The shop faxes your info to Atomic, they Fedex the new heels, and then the shop sends the defective heels to them via ground service.

Here in Jackson, we would always have new heels in 2-3 days since they ship out of Ogden. I called a few times to have them overnighted for tourists.

Any dealer will help you, as Atomic issues a $30 credit to the dealer's account for every return.

So I picked up a pair of free Centro 412s tonight --

I remember reading something about the recall last year, where Atomic was replacing their bindings with Atomic-branded Salomons. I can't find it now when searching.

If I bother sending the Centro in under warranty, will I just get a replacement set of the same binding (or just the heel pieces)? Or do I get a Salomon replacement? -- which would be much more preferable.

According to the local shop, Atomic will replace the Centro 412s will some version of the Neox.

Also as an FYI for those wondering in the future: Atomic is not covering the Ess Var-branded versions of these bindings, only the Atomic-branded ones. I had a set of Ess Var Centro 412s too, identical to the Atomic-branded ones -- now in the trash can.
